Hey all,
Just a paranoidal curious question.

How would you know if you did something to your engine like tapped a valve or other damage caused by overreving?

My car drives awesome, it is new (to me) 74,000 miles and runs like a champ. At my PPI a few weeks ago the car checked out incredible. I have never done anything to hurt the engine, but sometimes as I am driving I close the windows and concentrate on the pure engine sounds, what would I listen for if a problem did exist? Would something like this be VERY obvious or lie hidden until you pull the valve covers off. Thoughts!

I've had my car 2 months. The first 2 weeks I heard all kinds of phantom noises. I have a click in my dash, I researched it here & found it to be a ERG timer behind my speedo. I'll disconect it when I change my dash. If you do here something, research it here, you might find it. :)

if somthing in the vave train was a little bent it would not be running awsome ; a little is a lot in the world of valves and related parts.

I strongly advise you NOT go down that road. If it ain't broken, don't fix it. And don't start hearing things. Problems that need your attention will be obvious.

Paul, there is a ground that goes to one of the instruments. Disconnect that and your OXS mileage counter will stop ticking. Tape it so that it does not create a short in the future, and a fire.

911 Engines make a lot of noise, especially when they are cold. Don't worry about it, or if you are really concerned, compare it to other 911s...

There is a variation among Porsches...so check out similar years. For example, mine has a deep throaty rumble and my neighbor with an 88 has a very similar sound.

I have heard older 911s go by that had a definite "ticky" valvey sound to them...almost like you hear in some VWs (sorry to say). Perhaps these cars are in need of adjustment.

I was behind a C2 the other day with dual pipes and his car just sounded deep and loud. Couldnt hear valve noise because it was covered up.

I'm not an expert on pcars, but I've rebuilt a few american and british cars in my life. If you "tapped" a valve from over revving, you'd know it cause it means you just dropped a valve, or the piston just separated from the connecting rod or the rod separated from the crankshaft. Then it would sound like a jackhammer inside your engine, and you'd certainly know it.

I thought the valves in my 84 were noisy. My wrench disagreed...he said the noise was from the fuel injectors. I agree with the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" advice. Drive the car...enjoy it...when it breaks, you'll know. :)

Cool, you have all been a great help! Reading your responses is kind of like going to a "Porsche Shrink". Yes, doc I think I am hearing strange engine noises...

Just to be on the safe side I would drop the engine, split open the case and check things out from the ground up. Better safe than sorry :)
