Porsche just sitting in a side yard - Greensboro, NC

I was driving down Highway 29 today through Greensboro, NC (on my way eventually back home to Atlanta) and ...

About a mile north of Lee Road, I looked over to my right and there sits a 928 in the side yard of a not-too-well-cared-for property. Starting to get rust already on the back of the car.

Perhaps this is not a good "Porsche in the Barn" story - but someone please go rescue that poor 928 before it goes to P-Car heaven.

(I was going to post this on the 928 BBS, but there is more life in a cemetary than on the 928 BBS.)

If anyone checks it out and picks it up, even for just a parts car, please post a message.

There was a 356 in south Miami that was like that. I stopped one day to check it out and it was completely rusted out. Too bad.

I know the car you are talking about. It is not far from NC A&T university. I see it coming home from VIR.

If it was a 911 and I hadn't just rescued a bunch of parts from a closing shop it might be interesting.

That's like the idiot down the road from me. He has a well rusted 356 cab half under an old tarp, next to a bunch of tractors, a VW bug, mid 70's merican iron, etc... Stopped by twice to talk to the guy and was verbally accosted 30' from the front door of their double wide...by this guys father. "It ain't for sale, it ain't for sale!" I think they think it's worth big bucks. OK, maybe I shouldn't have pulled up in my black 911...

That car has been there for at least a year.

Like P-THOMAS, I also see it all the time coming home from VIR.

I'm sure a 928 would be a cinch to restore. I mean, those cars are cheap and easy, right?

Take the Balto 695 beltway to 795 towards Owings Mills to Rt. 30 North towards Hanover Pa., turn right on Lineboro Rd. and go about 6-7 miles, look on the left. It's a blue 356B Cab. Blue tarp, grandpa to the right with the shot gun and bank deposit slip in hand. On more serious note, I talked to the owner the first time I stopped. Seemed like a nice guy, didn't say no to selling it. Car has been sitting on exposed ground for 15 years. It all seems to be there between the rust bits. Since I couldn't have that Porsche I bought a 914 instead.

I know a guy who has a MG-TC that he's been planing on restoring for the last 15-20 years. In the meantime, it's sitting outside rusting away. It's a shame.

My mother had a 1966 Buick Wildcat with only 30K miles and in perfect condition in 1990. Sat in in her yard for 10 years - Wouldn't sell it or give it away. About three years ago, she finally gave it away. The rust had eaten through the car so badly that it went to the junkyard. If I were an engine guy, I would have pulled off the 455ci engine and carb before it was junked.

I thought the Buick Wildcat had the small aluminum V8 that was eventually sold to Rover.

Nope, lendaddy - This one had a big (and I mean big) block 455 cubic inch monster.

This thread reminded me of a 930 I saw in a yard near where my girlfriend lives. One night we were returning to her place after dinner and I spotted a black slant-nosed 930 sitting in the yard of a house. The paint had faded and the car had obviously sat for so long that mud had splattered onto the fenders from previous rains. I couldn't believe someone would let a car like that sit for that long in the mud, but there it was.

I got one for you guys,
I know where there is 4 356s (1 is a convertible "d" and the others are coupes) there is also a 912 targa and 912 coupe. They are all uncovered and they are sitting in knee high weeds. The guy doesn't even live in the area and is half crazy. He too wont sell them. I keep checking to see if he is still paying the property taxes on time. If he doesn't pay them I'll know he has passed away. Hopefully the cars will last that long.

Yeah, isn't that the one from the "U-Boat Commander" scene from Risky Business

Seriously, what's a 928?

A 928 is an 8-cylinder powerful Porsche no longer being built, once sold alongside the 911 and the 944. It's glory days were in the early-mid 80's as I seem to recall. Powerful and pretty-good-looking, but had a lot of mechanical problems. I never owned one, so this is just what I have heard. I think Porsche had grander schemes for the 928, perhaps even thinking that the 911 might fade away, but Porsche-philes kept the 911 on the top and the 928 is now obsolete. Someone else may have a better description.
