Odometer issue and a question
Well, here I am thinking that something major has just happened to my injection or ignition, as the car suddenly seemed to be getting like 8mpg. Funny thing was, it was running ok, the plugs seemed normal, no smoke etc etc. If it were that rich....
So, out of curiousity I check the odometer, and sure enough, its recording around 50-60% of actual mileage. Now, I know that they fail, but this is one strange gremlin. I'm going to take it out, but should I order the replacement drive gear in advance, in the issue of only pulling the sucker apart once? Anyone experience this failure mode, and if so, what did you find? |
The odometer gear may be slipping on the shaft. The tech article here on the Pelican site goes into this in some detail. Read this article before you order anything.
My odometer would only work when the car was "cold" before it stopped working all together. It would work correctly in the morning and then stop working in the afternoons on the way home from work... Mike |
Thanks, Mike. I've read the article-now that repro gears are available for 25 bucks or so, if the gear was loose on the shaft I was thinking I'd just replace it. Gluing in on would probably make it darn near impossible to effectuate a repair later if teeth went, and the Wayne's other suggestion of deforming the gear, while I'm sure workable, seem a little like something that is stopgap due to parts issues that may now be solved.
That said, thanks for your imput. Probably is the drive gear-its just funny that it seems to be turning all the time, just at a 50% rate. |
