OK, so 2 friends and I go out to check out a bright red 70 911T for sale locally that's really clean and rust-free. While poking around the engine compartment, I start to notice bits of Gulf Blue peeking out from under the factory undercoating. A quick go-round of the rest of the car comfirms that this now Guards Red car was originally Gulf Blue. This, of course, started an arguement about why anyone would paint a Gulf Blue car Guards Red (my side of the debate) versus why would anyone WANT a Gulf Blue car (the other 3 guys opinion).
Am I alone here in thinking the early 911 looks stunning in light blue? C'mon people, show me there's Gulf Blue cars out there with owners that love them!

One of the best early car colors ever. Add the Gulf Orange stripe and you can't go wrong. I believe Chuck Moreland is completing a beauty this color right now.

Maybe they were repainted in the 80s when Guards Red was in its heyday.
Personally... I think the odd blues, greens, yellows etc...look fantastic on the older P-cars. |

My '75 is Gulf Blue, and I'm always getting compliments on it -- from a wide spectrum of folks -- you ng girls to grandma's (neither of which know what kind of car it is) to male teenagers, who do know.

Gulf Blue on 88CS
I just located the owner of a '88 CS with factory paint to color Gulf Blue paint job - what a beautifiul car! Personally, I can't imagine why someone would paint over that great (and somewhat historic) color!
Incredible part of it is that the owner got the CS (approx 75K miles) from a dealer in New Mexico for $20K! That is a decent price for a well-documented, one owner stock Carrera, much less a CS! My guess is that since the car had the CS decal-delete option but with the Carrera script added to the engine cover (another option), the dealer did not know what he had! |
