Things you DON'T want to come out of your engine...

Hi all. Many of you followed (and helped...thanks) my Rennlist thread about being stuck in Nebraska after the 911T I had bought 2 days before had blown up. Well, today I cracked the case apart, and here's what I found!

http://www.whirledmedia.com/engineparts/engineparts.html

It looks like the crank, heads, and most of the pistons are ok though. So, I'll clean 'em up and sell them.

Enjoy.

Yea, thanks. It's ok though. I'm looking at buying a 3.0 built by a fellow Dick Elverude. It's supposed to be a killer motor. So far, I'm having some success selling off the major parts of the motor. So, when it comes down to it, it might just be a wash.

The Horror . . .

I am suprised the crank is sellable but then again I guess some people are willing to accept a reground crank from an exploded motor (assuming it can be ground to an undersized spec).

You're the man. I'd scream like a little girl if that came out of my engine. Way to suck it up and move on.

What the hell caused all of that?

Did you get any restitution from the guy who sold the car to you? $

Well, like I said when I first heard the knocking at 80mph down the highway...then BAM!

"Gee...that sounded expensive."

Sonic-

No restitution at all. In fact, the guy was pretty hostile about it. I'm going to take the high road and not trash him in a public forum. The engine notwithstanding, the car was misrepresented to me before I hopped on a plane and travelled to FishKill, NY to drive it back to Colorado. That said, I should have been a better buyer, and done a proper PPI and taken my time with the purchase. I also shouldn't have blindly trusted a complete stranger 2000 miles away. A fool and his money are soon parted!

Pics of the car are here, if you haven't seen it yet:

No choice in the matter. I can whine about it, or stick a 3 liter in the car and it will go like stink.

If it didn't make any noise, had good oil pressure, ran good and drove nicely all the way from NY to Nebraska I would not neccessarily think the seller had scammed you.

You could have just lost the 20+ year old car lottery.

No....it wasn't about the motor. There were other issues involved. (Like the car being completely rust free, and having Koni Adjustables, etc...)

Had I known about the rust issues (There aren't a ton, but there's some) I would have never flown out there. But again...caveat emptor....

Wow. Very nice car. I saw one just like it down here in Raleigh a year or two ago, rotting away. Owner wouldn't part with it.

Word to the wise - as far as those chrome decos on the wheel arches - you either love 'em or hate 'em. If you hate 'em, be careful about just yanking them off and tossing them out. There are concourse guys out there who would love to have them. They are a fairly uncommon factory optiion.

Again, nice car. Very striking. I like the monochromatic look a lot.

Well, it's no longer monochromatic...and I hate the wheel trim. I've polished the wheels (they needed it) and bought SC flares that will eventually be installed. That's some good advice on the wheel trim though...I might have just ripped it off and been done with it. Thanks for that.

Here are the wheel refinish pics:

Those wheels look excellent. Nice job. What did you use to polish them out?

Did they determine what let go in the motor? Dropped valve?

Think it was a rod bearing.

The wheels were a major PITA. Actually, the fronts were the worst. The 15X7 Rears just stripped really easily, with aircraft stripper and a hose. I eventually had the little crevices bead blasted. The fronts were a lot more difficult, as the aircraft stripper didn't make much of a dent in that super-secret impregnable Porsche paint! I ended up paying (Well, a case of beer) to have them fully bead blasted. Then, I used a combo of an air buffer with Wenol to polish them out. I may continue on, and perhaps clear coat them when I get them where I want. Or, I might get a set of Fikse wheels for the street and just use those for my race rubber. Don't know yet.

Judging by the coloring of the rod and bearing fragments I would say that there is a 99.9% likelyhood you are correct.

Yea, you think? The question is, why did that rod bearing go? That's what we can't figure out. Oil level was fine, car had no hiccups, gauges all read fine.

Ewwwww. On a good/bad scale, those pictures would be way down near the bottom of the scale in the region marked "bad".
Thanks for the nighmares BTW

Those obviously aren't Carrera rod bolts

Good luck with the 3.0.
