Wheel size on a 1977

Will a 15,16,or even a 17 inch wheel fit on a 77 911 with factory fenders (no flairs)? I'm at work and I dont remeber , but I think my car has 14 inch (small) wheels on it from the factory and I'm looking at alternatives.

If so what size tires am I limited to. And will I have to make mods for a larger wheel to fit (rolling the lip)?

Regards
Rick

A 1977 911 had 15 inch wheels with 185/70x15 tires.

I remember that a swedish pelicanhead (sorry can't remember the name) tried to run 17 inch cups on his 1973 Targa and it didn't work well. I believe 205/50x16 tires will fit.

77 was the first year of "SC flares". This means that you can use any wheel that cames on car years 77-89. I thinks the biggest I have seen are 18"x8" on the front and 18"x9" on the back with a rolled fender lip. Check the archives, this subject has been beat to death.

The only cars with the "SC flairs" in '77 were the Euro Carrera 3.0's. Although other cars might have been modified later.

a stock 77 911 2,7 shouldn't have SC/Carrera flares as far as I remember. So forget 9x17 wheels. If you have SC/Carrera flares 9x17 will work.

A picture might help

On an unflared '77, you're looking at 7x15s with 225/50s or 205/60s or 6x16s with 205/55s. There are few other options, but you won't be able to fit much of anything larger than the above tires....

"SC" flares didn't appear until '78 on the SCs. US Carreras ('74-'75) and 3.0 lietr Carreras in '76 and '77 also had the rear 9 inch flares (commonly called SC or Carrera flares).

I have 16" 6's & 7'so on my 76' so I know they will fit. Sorry about the confusion I was incorrect about the flairs. SC flares started in 78.

Terry,

16x7s on an unflared car will work. I've seen one, at least, that was running 225/50-16s in the rear, but it was set at "rally" height to keep the tires from rubbing.

What size rear tire are you using?

Mike

They are 6's in the front and 7's in the back.

Terry,

From the photo you posted, those appear to be 6s on the rear. 7s have a noticeable larger lip extending out from the center of the wheel and they are visibly different from the 6x16s. Your rears appear to be the same as the fronts.

What size tires in the rear?

Maybe I'm wrong?

Mike

They are 7's. I thought the same thing when I saw the pic. It looks a little funny. As you can see the tire is only about a 1/4" from the lips on the outside. I also have very still suspension, maybe thats why the inside doesn't rub.

Here you go:

Finally . . . 7s & 8s on a narrow body.

I just bought every set of these wheels in the US . Make me an offer.
