Engine Idle Problems
Hi
I recently had my '82 SC serviced. When I collected my car, it had been standing around for a number of hours and so the engine was cold Car started first time (as usual) and revs were sitting at around 1200 which is where they normally are for a while on a cold start. After reaching normal operational temperature though, my idling was down to around 500 revs (it normally sat at around 800 before my service) and was obvioulsy a bit rough....felt like engine was about to stall. Took the car back to the shop the next day and they re-tested fuel mixtures and did some "adjustments" (I'm not mechanically minded so don't ask what the adjustments were) Picked my car up (engine was warm this time) and the idling was back around 800...and very smooth. Great ! Next morning though , on a cold start, my engine was idling at around 2000 !! Also, if I reved the engine gently, it would take a long time for the revs to drop back. Once the engine was warm though, idling revs were at around 800 again. I need to take my car back to the shop but would appreciate if anyone out there can explain what the possible cause for the high idle revs on cold start...and why when I rev the engine gently the revs dont drop back quickly like they used to. Thanks a lot ! |
Ask your mechanic a bunch of questions. Your paying him. 2000 rpms cold sounds a bit hgh but not too bad. I can't remember where my SC idle when cold. I always figured if the CIS ran reasonabley good, I was happy, because it really sucks

Sounds like a vacuum leak to me. What service was performed?

Really just an oil change but they noted on the invoice "checked and adjusted fuel settings for engine running"
