I'm used to seeing some ugly wheels at AX. Like said above, no one will laugh at your bamboo wheels if you use them to spank the competition.
|
Where's the choice for "It doesn't matter on the track"?
I run the same on my 83SC. Fuch's in 6 & 7s for the street, phone dials in 7 & 8s on the track. |
They look pretty cool, and were stock on mine--

A spare set of wheels for the track is a great luxury, so congrads on finding a good set of wheels.
The following is a pic of the old beat up mille miglia cup wheels that I picked up cheap on e-bay and painted myself for racing purposes. I agree with everyone that it don't matter what they look like when it comes to track wheels, but you have no reason to be ashamed for wearing a solid set of phone dials. http://www.tamparacing.com/gallery/d.../11516Pic4.jpg |
KilnRed83SC, if yo0u ever decide to part with the Phone Dials, assuming they are 7 & 8 x 16, id buy them. Lemme know. Thanks!
|
Kevin, is there a sharp edge where the rim meets the center on the phone dials? Might look good with the centers painted satin black like the Fuchs.
|
No sharp edge Dave. Nice smooth radius/curve from the center to the rim.
Here's a closeup of the polished front wheel from a 944. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1069175563.jpg |

suppose you had carbon-fiber body-panels; would you keep them on for the street, but replace with steel for the track event? . . . flying cones can be brutal, doncha-know. |
Yep. The Fuchs are lighter but only by a few lbs. a piece at most. How measurable is that savings for a ham-fisted, early-apexing dunderhead like me? :p Not much. Plus, the dials are way cheaper and you don't care if they get monked up at the track.
The phone dials are some pretty sturdy wheels too. Not your typical cast wheel from what I can see. The rim flanges are just as thick and beefy as the Fuchs (much unlike my other ultra-fragile Compomotive wheels), big hubs and the castings are quite smooth/clean. Actually quite nice wheels. Not the most aesthetically pleasing wheel, but good quality without a doubt. Sure they're not Fuchs. That's what makes the Fuchs special! :D |
Kevin summed it up.
Sturdy and good quality. And they are lighter than some of the other options, like C2 replicas. Sure given a unlimited budget, I'd get Fuchs. Oops no, with an unlimited budget, I'd be taking delivery of a GT3. But with my checkbook, at half the cost for comparable widths, I can use the savings towards more track time in my 20 year old SC. |
fine for the track, but fugly imho;)
paint 'em black for the track. |
I think it's kind of a cool look... Definitely sets the car apart; I mean how many red 911's are there out there with black Fuchs? A zillion? (one of them mine)
|
I think they look good on your car and you can't beat having two sets.
|
These or very similar were the standard wheels on the non-sport Carrera 3.2 back in the late 80s.
These Carrera had no tea tray or front lip, the telphone dials wheels and rode about 1 inch higher. These cars are as rare as hen teeth now as they weren't exactly popular at the time........ I'm also pretty sure they are fuchs wheels tho, as in made by Fuchs as opposed to the 'Fuchs' we know and love..... |
I thought the dials looked kinda neat at first, but the initial novelty wears off. Fuchs look better without a doubt. Definitely nice to be able to have two sets.
The phone dial wheels are made by ATS, not Fuchs. The ATS logo/name is cast in the back of the wheel. |
KTL, if you ever decide to part with the Dials, assuming they are 7 and 8 x 16s, let me know. Thanks!
