Cold start problem...
 

I've used the search function and have found quite a bit of good info about repairing cold start problems. The car starts after a few tries and then stumbles a bit. I give it some gas which at first has no effect, but then catches. The car does not rev up to 2,000 rpms for about 20 sec. like it used to, so I use the gas pedal. After that the car runs fine.

My question is what should I try first? Adjust idle? Replace cold start valve? Etc...

Sounds like a Cold Start Valve to me! You are in luck Pelican sells them for the '76 911's.

However, I just noticed that Pelican shows the Cold Start Valve as DISCONTINUED for 1974 911's!!! Does anyone have any suggestions on how to repair or an upgrade?

A non-operative cold start valve "system" could be causing the problems of having to try several times before the car will start and run. As could a blown airbox. An inoperative cold start valve will not have anything to do with the poor running later as it's functioning is over once the starter is no longer crankling. The poor running could be due to several items; the warm up regulator (WUR) and auxilliary air regulator (AAR) being among them. I would first check the cold start valve circuit for proper functioning and connections before I'd replace anything. Jim

Jim is right, once the engine is started your problem could be else were.
