Tampa/St. Pete Porsche Groups

Well it looks like I will be making a move soon to the Tampa area. Pretty area and close to Sebring. Can anybody give me any clues to Porsche groups in the area? Thx.

I also ment to ask for trusted mechanics in the area. Its kind of hard leaving a mechanic you trust.

Hey there, Welcome to the land of sunshine. There is a small group of Pelican heads in the Tampa St. Pete area. I'm sure the rest of them will welcome you as well. The local PCA group ( Suncoast Group) is very active and they run DE at Sebring as well. Too bad you just missed parade. Local mechanics...Dave White autosports. Very good and very trust worthy. He is a racer shop and it is worth it to just go ther to drool over the cars in his shop. He is currently restoring a 911R that he found, But he has a stable of race cars as well. Reasonable rates and prompt service. He is passionate about Porsches and is a legend in the race world. Let us know when you arrive.

Glad to hear this. My wife and I both love running DE's up here at Hallett. Hopefully we can find some groups that will allow us to run DE's with two marquees as well. Thanks for the info.

I now go to German Tech, a shop in Largo, recommended by fellow Pelicanite Jeremy, and its only a little drive accross the bridge from Tampa about 20 minutes. They are very dilligent and trustworthy. They are the TechArt dealer for this part of the US. They do a lot of highend work on Turbos and such down the the ordinary stuff on my '88. The owner, Joe Vetter, is really personable and knowledgeable. You can just call and talk to him, very accessable, and
let him know that I, Bill Smoak, sent you.

Dave White's shop has been around a long time in Tampa, and while I am not a huge supporter of his, he really has some great people working for him and a large following. He and another guy were the first P-car mechanics here in Tampa when the old Cady dealership started selling porsches. I still would recommend the drive to German Tech over Dave Whites place, but thats just my opinion.

No matter which, I think you would be more than pleased with the level of knowledage and service both shops have.

Here are the email addresses:

Good luck and welcome to the land of sun and fun.

Cool

Welcome to the Sunshine state.
Over here on the SE coast, we also do DE's at Sebring splitting weekends with Suncoast so you can get 2 days at this fun track.
Next one is Sept 20th (Suncoast) and the 21st (Gold Coast Region). The best way to learn Sebring is 2 days in a row.

Our absolute top DE of the year is at Homestead on Oct. 12th.
Check our web site for details www.goldcoastregion.org We also run at Moroso Mororsports Park in Palm Beach County, a 2.7 mile course. Our next DE there July 26th is sold out with nearly 100 drivers registered. DE is alive and well in So. Florida.

Send me a PM for more details.
Cheers

One of my favorite auto enthusiast resources for the area is TampaRacing.com

Since it is a public board it has its share of ricers (which are usually hazed off the site) but it also has a wide range of different types of car enthusiasts which is what I like about it.

It has an Auto-X/Road Racing board that I love where you can usually hear about every interesting DE, racing and auto-x that is going on in the state. Lets just say that there is a lot of stuff going on all the time within an hour or two drive from the Tampa area.

While I have come to love Pelican's board for getting porsche specific info the only other board I read is Tampa Racing as a way to keep my finger on the pulse of the local scene.

Hope to see you around some time soon.

I'm getting more excited about this by the moment.

I don't know if I will have the porsche down with me right away but I can certainly help work corners or something. Do some of the groups running DE's allow marquees other than Porsche? I have a supercharged miata that we like to run as well. It can keep up with a stock 3.2, beyond that I just wave as they go by.

Yes, welcome to the lightning capital of the world. A lot around here to keep a P-car nut busy and we also have some pretty good football teams as well.

Hope you'll get involved with PCA Suncoast region. We have a lot of activities, including 4-5 times a year at Sebring for DEs. I've been an instructor with the club for 11 years and we run a well-organized, safe and fast school. You won't be disappointed.

Fortunately nearly every auto-x and track event allow all makes to attend.

Even the local Miata club allow all makes to attend their auto-xes with the exception of a few 'special' events.

And in addition to our well known tracks and speedways in the area a couple years ago the owners of the drag strip in gainesville built a beautiful test track with some of the cleanest pavement I have seen in years. Here is a pic of the layout to give you an idea of what it is like. To put it into perspective those paths are as wide as a modern two lane road and I have no problem getting my car up to about 80 on the big sweepers and faster on the straights.

I'll second German Tech - Joe is a good guy - I have been going to him for years. Welcome to the Sunshine State. No state taxes, beautiful weather - a little hot right now - but you'll love the winters!

Hey guys - I think we need to do another Starbucks get together, what do you think?

Yep,
Gainesville is THE best place to hold an autocross. I can't wait til this Fall when the Martin Sports Car Club puts on their mini prix event. Just think Gainesville with no cones.

Yeah, I went to MSSC's last mini-prix and it was AWESOME.

Thanks to the SCCA and MSSC I think I have been lucky enough to run the g-ville course at four or five seperate events.

Yeah, it would be neat to meet some of the area 911/930 folk.

Unfortunately if it is any time soon I will have to show up in either a jetta or POS escort.

BTW, some TampaRacing.com members have been posting tales of a bad ass black 930 running around the st pete area with some sort of skull graphic on it.

Anyone know anything about this car?

8/2 works for me. How about we meet in Pinellas this time? Never mind. I love the Causeway early in the morning! Forget I said that.

8/2 Sounds great to me. I'm in. Are we talking about the same Starbucks in North Tampa? I look forward to seeing everyones cars. And everyone can see the "master touchup" paint job the original owner did to my hood and my key mark on my drivers fender [sorry about that I was venting again, someone pointed them out to me this morning at the gas station, "sure looks nice for an '88, what is that mark near the emblem") GRRRRRRR!

Looking forward to meeting you guys.
