petrol cap removal

I want to tidy up my slightly scratched petrol cap . What is the correct procedure to remove it from the car , assuming this can be done . I didn't see an obvious method when I looked though .

I assume what you mean is the lid, not the cap. The cap unscrews, obviously. The lid (the cutout in the fender) unbolts from the fender, and the reason it may not be obvious is that as I remember, the small machine screws that hold it on are accessed from inside the fender, behind the left rear wheel.

No , thanks though Stephan , perhaps I didn't explain too clearly I mean the petrol filler 'flap' , I call it a cap on the left front wing and it's on a '78SC

yep, three hex bolts (4mm-6mm?), accessed from under the fender, and you're home free.

Eric, that's what I was talking about--the "flap," as you call it, the lid, the door, the cover, whatever--the thing that opens when you pull the T handle.

I'm with ya Steve. I call the metal painted bit the "door". To me, the rubber fuel bib is the "flap". The threaded cap is still the "cap" though.

You gotta watch those Brits, they call fenders "wings" and spell tires with a "y" too!

Not to mention driving on the "wrong" side of the road!
(just kidding with ya)

Plus...they'll talk to you later in a fortnight...instead of in two weeks. And their "rubber" is the eraser at the end of a pencil, whereas....oh nevermind!

Do you mean the flat metal thingie on the front fender that opens when you pull the knob under the dashboard?

You americans shouldn't be so self secure. You don't even have a word for the round thingies that the tires are mounted on. We call it a "Fælg" in Denmark. In Germany they call it "Felg".

And what about your "steering wheels"..... Wheels fit ON the car not IN the car LOL Germans aren't better...they call it a "Lenkrad" which is pretty much the same.

Spelling is too tricky for US guys. Night becomes nite and colour becomes color.

yeah, and watch it, they'll try to pass you a check instead of cheque...

aw, this could go on forever.

The one they (the Americans) do seem to have right is that silly lieutenant thing, how in the heck do we (those of the Commonwealth persuasion) make that left-tenant?

The best one I have heard is the Brit pronunciation of the word "aluminum". What exactly is "AL-you-min-ee-um" anyway?

Ok, I'm done. I promise!
