Can only one strut be replaced?
 

Resulting from an off-road excursion, one strut is damaged.

What happens if only one is replaced? What if one strut but both inserts are replaced?

I would think if you replaced the one strut with the exact same style strut on the other side and then had new inserts in both struts you should be OK. I'm sure more expert opinions will follow...

how old are the struts. If they are fairly new, then I wouldn't mind, but if they are old then I might think twice. Are they the original or have you replaced them. If they are original then by all means replace them both

No problem at all!

I had a bad strut that was slightly bend at the spindle. The bent strut had tons of negative camber and I couldn’t get the other one to match it, especially after lowering. I was surprised at how little it was actually bent. It was maybe an 1/8” difference at the axle threads but it sure did throw things off a lot.

I replaced the strut and both inserts when I rebuilt my suspension and I can now align it perfectly. Go for it and Good luck!

Oh, and while you are at it. Replace the balljoints, bushings, tie rods, etc. You’ll be glad you did!

I've got the original Boge struts.

Is it the strut housing or the insert. If it's the whole housing then as someone else said, replace the housing and then put a new insert in the other housing (the new housing should come with a new one). If it's primarily the insert that is bad then just replace both inserts.

You may or may not want to consider a good used housing. If you can verify that it is good then it will likely be a fair bit cheaper than an entirely new strut.

good point Steve. I went w/ a new strut, if you were to look at my old one you would never know that something was wrong w/ it. I figured most were being sold used for a reason so it would be a 50/50 chance.

Hmm, scratch that, I have a strut in great shape if you want to buy it... Just kidding, unless you want to be able to have lots of negative camber on the left side, then you can have it for free.
