MSD and Points or Ignitor
I have a 2.7 RS with 40 IDA 3Cs.
I am going to install an MSD. The mechanic suggested that I replace the Ignitor with Points. Is this a good idea or bad? |
I'm using an ignitor with an MSD on my 73 2.4. It works well and it's great not having to deal with points and dwell.
Some people don't like the ignitor, there have been a lot of reports of DOA units. I believe most of these DOA units are actually due to the wrong model ignitor being ordered. Get the wrong one and it won't work, surprise. |
keep the ignitor it works better than the points in my opinion

Put the points in your emergency repair kit.

What's the Ignitor? Like a Pertronix (replaces the points)?
|
Pertronix makes the ignitor (sp). The other option is the optical trigger unit made by Crane which also should be able to trigger the MSD or Crane equivalent. Some guys on this forum have had some quality issues with their ignitor - not as many issues with the Crane, for what that's worth.

I am about to do MSD and Ignitor in a '76 Euro Carrera 3. I don't want to hijack this thread, but do have one further question to throw into the mix here: Standard plug leads or Magnecor?
My leads need replacing and I would consider new standard ones if they can handle the MSD output. Any experience/recommendations? Al G |

I installed Magnecors because Steve Weiner said exactly what Ronin did about the Beru connectors. The Weiner is high on Magnecors, and that's good enough for me.

You can use any type of spark plugs wires that are spiral core. Dont use solid core spark wire with the MSD. I have a Braided spark plug wires and a Crane Cams XR-700 electronic ignition. I dont recomend use points unless you have a resisrtance in the positive cable of the coil or the point will burn.
