What are the upper strut mounts made of?
Are the upper strut mounts steel or an alloy [or ferrous or nonferrous]? In other words, after time do the bolts rust in or oxidize?

Magnet sticks to it. Actually, looks like std. nuts are tack welded to back side.

I believe they are stamped steel, but all the ones I've seen are cad plated, so rust shouldn't be an issue. Although, over the years and a few alignments/camber changes later, they might get scratched up enough to wear through the plating. Not sure if that applies to early cars, though. I just don't know if they plated them from the beginning.

Good point... I think the MK1 & MK2 VWs used plated steel strut mounts... I have a yard full of these cars and have never had the metal part rust to the point where it had to be replaced [see the rusted shock hardware thread if you're wondering what this is about].
