It's no wonder these things DIE!

After a short drive tonight, I was under the hood checking the oil etc.
I happened to put my hand on the Bosch CDI box.....ouch!.....that sucker sure gets hot! Yes, there are a few cooling fins on the outside of the box, but I'm thinking....why didn't Porsche mount the box where it could get more, cool air?

Probably just to keep it out of the weather.

They last a long long time though. I think mine made it from January of '71 until fall of '96. Not too bad!

When my original coil shorted out, and turned into a heating element, that couldn't have helped it any either!

i was thinking, that a small duct/hose off the fan housing, directed at the CD box might be a good idea. when i get my turbo car back together, i'm going to do that. i had one fail just as i was approaching the customs inspector, returning from canada, after waiting in line for 2 hours at 85° temps. that was kind of embarrassing.

That's a good idea John. I feel something should be done to prolong the life of the box.
Maybe excessive heat is why folks have troubles with Permatunes and MSD's too.

Yeah, how about it?
I'm thinkin a nice little 12volt fan like the ones that cool the rad on a Harley V-Rod.
They are made in Italy by Spal.

how about a spare...

Relax Doug. (at least for this weekend)
John Walker has generously lent us an extra 6-pin CDI for the Round-up drive.

(He's part of the plot. . .just between you and me. . . okay?)
