993 VIN # question.
I have just run Car Faxes on two '95 993's. Both are listed as C2's and Car Fax makes no distinction between the two. It just says "CARRERA2/4". Turns out one seller now says his is a C4. He is selling the car for his dad and neither seem too knowledgeable about the car. Is there any way to discern from the VIN whether it's a C2 or C4? Thanks. BTW, if anyone needs a Car Fax run, I subscribed for a month. PM me if you need one.

Thanks. Looks like the VIN makes no mention of C2 or C4. I called the shop and they assured me it was a C2. Coincidentally, Robin (of p-car.com) is checking out a 993 for me in Miami today.

Perhaps I'm reading it wrong but it looks like there's a differentiation between the two on Robin's site...
For example, here are four 1995 variants listed, the last of which seems to be a C4? 911 CARRERA RS 95 S 99TS3 90061>90640 M64.20 200KW 911 CARRERA CABRIO 95 S 99SS3 30061>39000 M64.05/06 200KW 911 CARRERA CABRIO (USA) (CDN) 95 S 99SS3 40061>49000 M64.07/08 200KW 911 CARRERA 4 COUPE 95 S 99SS3 10061>19000 M64.05 200KW I would guess that the preceeding three are C2's?

Richard, if you are referring to US models of the 993 there is a distinction made in the vin numbers so that you can determine whether it is a 2- or 4-wheel drive version:
for the second set of 3 digits (the first 3 digits will be WPO) there will be 2 letters followed by a number (these 3 digits are referred to as the US VSD code) - the 1st letter will be A,C or D indicating Coupe, Cabriolet or Targa. This will be followed by either the letter A (2-wheel drive) or B (4-wheel drive). The final digit of the three will be a number - 0 (seatbelt only), 1 (driver airbag) or 2 (driver & passenger airbag). ROW market cars left these three digits as ZZZ so you cannot determine whether these particular cars are 2 or 4WD from their vins. Thus a US 993 with a vin starting WPOCA2 will be 2WD cabriolet fitted with driver & passenger airbags. Andy '69 911E----------->R

Jim, the car in question is in Las Vegas. But the one in Miami I'm checking out is a twin of yours. Looks identical.

I don't think this is correct - I've checked dozens of VINs on different sites and haven't seen a WP0CB. Check ebay or autotrader for C4 cabs, and you'll see what I mean.
