Uni-directional tyre rotating wrong direction
 

What are the dangers of running a uni-directional tyre in the wrong direction, in other words, rotating it in the opposite direction?

Bridgestone, on their website, says: "Helps expel water more rapidly, reducing the risk of aqua-planing"

Is aquaplaning the only problem?

more noise possibly, creating more heat, faster wear......

Well if water flow towards the outside of the tire in one direction, I would assume that it flows towards the center of the tire in the other direction. I wouldn't want to drive that care when it rains.

Rotate the wheels from one side of the car to the other.

I had this problem on my car for more than 2 years, and it wasn't a problem.

It has to do with the way the belts are lapped, but it doesn't make a darn bit of difference as far as I can tell.

DON'T try and flip it if you've put miles on it already. If it's, like, a day or two before you notice, you can still wear it in properly - assuming you don't drive more than 100 miles in a day.

I've been told that driving the tire in the wrong direction can cause it to "unwrap".

Obviously backing up does not count as "driving".

It's just what I've heard and have no data to verify or deny it so please no flames.

I am posting it as a reponse because I would not mind knowing whether or not it is true.

Well, soon enough we'll know what the effect is, if any at all. I'm driving a long distance over the weekend and will be doing so every weekend for the next couple of months. Relatively high speed, relatively poor surface. By the time the wet season starts it will be time for a new set of tyres anyway. I'm not going to the effort of changing the tyre around if it's only going to last a few months anyway.
It's a front tyre so at least the load isn't high, except perhaps under hard braking.

But seriously. Why not just change it. Probably cost about $10 to have it remounted and ballanced. Or whatever you use over there :)

A directional tread pattern is designed to move water out of the way.

The owner operator of Traquest who frequents Rennlist, and has lots and lots of track time says he has done it several times with no problems.

Just returned from a long trip with the tyre facing the "wrong" way. High speeds, bad roads. Had to brake hard a few times. No problems thus far.
