Swaybar Upgrade-will prevent rollovers?
Wondering if upgrading(beefier) swaybars will help in lessening the chance of a rollover (eg in evasive maneuvers).
Tho' this is mainly in regards to taller cars/SUV's, the principle would be the same for any car, incl Porsches. Any thoughts? Thanks Mike '86 coupe '99 Jeep Grand Cherokee |
Without getting into long engineering discourse, the answer is a qualified yes, they do help reduce rollovers. But you can go too far in attaching huge bars so the vehicle lifts a wheel- thereby reducing contact patch, thereby reducing car control, etc etc. Roll overs happen for all sorts of reasons: too steep chassis angle during emergency manouvers, too low air pressure in one tire during same, catching a problem piece of pavement, inexperienced driver behind the wheel to name a few.
Before going out and buying anti roll bars (sway bars) , have the intended vehicle driver take a good accident avoidance course and teach them how to do basic maintanance Of course, if this is an attempt to persuade the wife that you just had to have those trick sway bars on your P car because it will help keep it from rolling over, then all bets are off! |
