I have a question about changing out a 912 motor for a 911 2.0, 2.2, 2.4 or.... motor.
I have a vary good 68 912 Targa. It runs great, but it is unfortunately underpowered. I know that the 912 and 911 were assembled on the same line. The different motor assemblies were pretty much bolted right onto the same 901 tranny. Then that with related sheet metal, electronics, (and in the case of the 911) an external oil cooler and loaded into the same 901 chassis/bodies. Also, there was a difference in weights added to front of the car. My questions are: Has anyone out there done this, and is there information on the transplant? Which motor is the best? Since my car is an SWB, a lighter motor would probably be better, and pre-74 would be good so I would not have to worry about smog. How much weight do you need to add to the front of the car? Any other issues? Thanks

There is a lot of good info on this subject on the 912 board on this site and also several folks who know all about this on the www.bbs912.org site. I don't think the snog would be a problem since the car will still be a 68...although where you are may be different than here in Texas.
I believe the only major mod you would have to do is add the oil tank since the 616 mill in a 912 is wet sump. Everything else is there for mounting it right in to your 901 tranny, of course you'll need the 911 flywheel and clutch. Get the wiring figured out and run the oil cooler lines and mount it...done!!! Sounds easy...maybe I should try it...

I have done the change on a 66 912.
I put in a 2.0lt with S pistons and E cams. I have had the engine dynoed and it puts out about 155hp The handling was interesting when I first drove it on the track, But I have gotten used to it over time. The car runs similar times on the track to a stock 3.2. What you need is a oil tank, I used one out of a 3.2, engine mounting brackets I had these made up by my brother-in-law who works in a sheet metal shop. The engine does mount to the 901 gear box, you will need to find a fly wheel clutch and preasure plate. If you use a 2.0 or a 2.2 with fly wheel and clutch attached you shoul have no troubles.

All the above info sounds good check the archives this is nothing new. The only question not answered was the weights in the front there was two 25 lb weights added to the front I beleive in the bumper. So a 50 lb bag of sand or dog food works too.

I do not run the extra wieght and I have run the car up to 130mph with no ill effects. I have also lost the backend at 80mph + which is interesting but not scary.
I do run wider tyres than the 911 originally came with. I would not run any extra weight in the front as extra weight is not what you want on the track. I plan to change the exhaust to something lighter as the std muffler is very heavy and right at the back of a car.

look at my post "911 or 912". I did a complete restoration on a 66 911.I found a perfect 912 body and threw the 911 into the 912 body.ask me any questions on that post.I am selling the car because I have atrack RS clone and it is so much fun.I love the early motors because their high reveng capabilities. you should also change the torsion bars

Why don't you put a built type IV/914 engine in it? Seems like you could avoid the extra weight, oil tank, etc. and still get 120 to 150 horsepower. The 912 handles better than the 911 & you would retain that. Cost would probably be a lot less also.

I am in the process of this right now. Putting a 75 2.7s in my 67 912. Havent seen any major problems so far. The only semi-difficult thing so far was cutting out the inside of the rear fender for the oil tank. The job itself was not so difficult as the idea of taking a saw to my car.. Anyway, a 2.7 engine and tank, a flywheel/clutch from a 69 911, welding in the 911 mounts to the rear coners, figuring out the wiring (which hasnt been all that bad), and spending too much money.. and i am almost done. I am just saving up for a paint job before i put in the engine. By the way, if you find any good info or pics on this, let me know - I thought there would be more! -k
