'79 Turbo Not Starting Ignition Question
My newly acquirred 930 is not starting. I posted a couple weeks ago about this same topic.
When this happens the car will try to run...barley, then die. Today when the same thing happened I pulled the coil wire to test spark. With the key on the coil wire was pulsing a spark. At what seemed to be the same pulse intervals, the fuel pump was making a "chunk-chunk" instead of a steady wine. Also, the relay at the left year was clicking at the same intervals. While cranking there was no spark from the coil wire. It has done this a few times and I can go back in few minutes and it will start without ant trouble. Today I have not been so fortunate. I forgot to mention that it happens when the engine is both cold and hot. Any more ideas? Thanks, DLG |

I haven't actually had this problem but here's my advice:
First remove and clean all ground wires. Get access to a manual and perform checks on the CDI ignition box, ignition switch and coil, and check continuity on all wires in the ignition system. My gut feeling is that it's the ignition box, the little box on the driver side of the engine bay next to the fuel accumulator. You could use this as an excuss to upgrade to a Perma-tune or MSD CDI system weather it's the problem or not.

bypass the delayed ignition cutoff relay, which is next to the rear defrost relay, and see if that fixes it. pull off the plug on the bottom of it and bridge the two sets of red wires that are on one end of the plug. leave the relay off.

What does the delayed ignition cutoff relay look like? PO has a "Clifford" alarm that has been wired into the circuit so it is not stock. There is a small brown square relay. I assumed it was part of the alarm set-up.
Car started eventually and I almost got home before it backfired loudly and stalled. Had to tow it on in. |

it sits on the electrical board to the left of the engine. it's to the rear of the defrost relay. it's silver metal, just like the defrost relay, but smaller, with a mounting tab on top. remove the screw from the tab, pull it out and pull off the plug. you will know if it's the right relay when you look at the bottom of it and see 4 spades and a little round tube sticking out. the power to the CD unit runs thru it. might not be the problem, but bypass it and see if that fixes the problem.

It's number 4 in the picture.
The relay part number is 93061711701 and it sells for about $45. To find it in the Pelican catalog, use the search function by entering the part number. ![]()
