Do all CDI boxes "whine"?

I joined old skul as a spectator at Putnam Park DE over the weekend. Driving to the track Sat AM the car just died. Could restart (electrics fine) but would idle for a short while and then suddenly die. Towed it to the track and after cooling down it restrted...got thru turn 4 and ....it died. Numerous very nice assistants looked it over. It apppears to be pumping fuel (should mention it backfired loudly as it died) and at time it produced spark from the coil wire..but never when it was not starting. I rushed out at lunch and bought a Blaster coil..still no spark. So...the consensus was CDI box. My car has a Permatune. There is no high pitched whine from it. Does the permatune usually whine like the Bosch box does (we checked two SC's and they both "whined")?????
I have a MSD 6AL at home but interested in hearing the boards diagnosis.....before confusing myself with trying to fit it.

FWIW: Replaced fuel pump relay with spare, checked fuel pump fuse
Fuel pump makes its noise.
checked distributor.
as noted replaced coil.
checked green distributor ?trigger wire..taped an area that looks ?
Checkled all the grounds I could find

All the Bosch CDI's whine. In the older Permatunes (the old blue anodized ones) you could hear the whine. In the newer (unpainted aluminum) I have never heard them whine.
