Can anyone help with my 911's history and VIN?

HI All

After posting on various forums and sites all over the world wide web I actually got one from a wanted add in my local free adds paper!

She's a gorgeous black 1972 2.4T, rhd manual. The gent I got her from has had her sitting in his garage for the past 12 years and had done nothing with her! She needs full restoration, and I can't wait to get stuck in but my better half has other projects for me to do first!!

She has had a number of registration number changes and I wondered if anyone knows the car or knows any of the previous keepers. I will be applying to DVLA for the history file but I thought it was also worth trying on here!( also posted in europe forum)

She started out life I think as EAH 9K.

She then had a change poss around 1984 to 200 EYS.

At some point she was JDS 516K.

And she is now 7908 SF.

Also can anyone decode the numbers for me please?

VIN Number: 119/10/0119
Engine Number: 619/0882

I have a few of the old MOT certificates and from them it shows that she has spent a few years of her life in or around Glasgow and Helensburgh areas of Scotland.

Does anyone have any info?

Thanks

Darryl

Darryl - both the vin # & the engine serial number indicate that this is a 1969 2.0 T !

Check the engine type no. (on the flat horizontal surface of the crankcase close to the engine serial no. at the rhs of the fan housing)- it will be 901/03 if it is a '69T.

Does the engine have Weber carbs ?

Hi Andy

Thanks for that.

I have just checked the engine (easy as it's not in the car!) and the only numbers I can find say: 901/03 (just as you said) and below that it says 19846.

On the log book it says the date of registration is 03/01/1972 and that it is a 2341 cc!

Any ideas?

Thanks

Darryl

Darryl - do the engine & vin numbers on the V5 match those on the car ?

The vin no. for a '72 2.4T would be a 10-digit number starting with 911

& the engine number for a 2.4T (type no. 911/57) would be in the range:

6520001 - 6523284

Hi Andy

The Vin number on the car reads : 119 100 119
The Vin on the log book reads : 119/10/0119

The engine number on the log book reads 619/0882
The only numbers i can see on the engine read 901/03 and 19846

And yes the carbs are Webers.

Darryl

There are items that changed after the 69 MY that may help you identify the car.

A 69 car will have the guages fixed from the back, while later cars had the guages pushed into a rubber gasket from the drivers side.

69 doors are opened by pressing a button on the outside of the handle, 72 cars have a trigger behind the handle.

What about the gearbox? A 69 car will have a 901 box with 1st gear on a dogleg, down to the left, 2.4 cars have 1st in the normal H pattern with 5th up to the right.

Hope this helps

HI Nick

Yup 1st is down to the left and the doors are opened via push button not a trigger!

So it looks as if I now have a 69 not a 72 as thought!

Don't the 72's also have the external oil filler on the fender?

Yes Jim the seller represented the car as a 72!

But I have to say I don't think he had any idea that it was an earlier car, I think he bought it 12 years ago as a 72 car too!

So the question now being, why is a 69 car registered as a 72? Could it just be clerical error or is there a similar simple explanation?

Do I do some digging and try to sort it out, as it should be registered on a G suffix I assume really, rather than the K siffix that it was once registered as.

I am a bit miffed that it's not the car that I thought it was, and I had looked for a 2.4 as on reading about them they seemed to be the one to have, but now I find that I have a 2.0 which I assume is not going to be as quick.

So do I restore her to original spec or change the engine and have a none standard car?

What sort of performance difference can I expect between the 2.4 that I thought I had and the 2.0 that I have?

Any thoughts or suggestions anyone?

Well first off...do you like the car? Even though it is not what it was presented to you do you care? Did you pay fair market price for a 72 car or a 69 car? Ar eyou buying the car because you REALLY wanted a 2.4 or will you be happy with a 2.0. There is a big difference in cars in my opinion.

I would say that you paid a fair price independent of the model, A 2.0 is worth maybe a little less than a 2.4T, but the value will be more dependent on the quality of your restoration.

The 2.0 and 2.4 have the same declared power output, though the 2.4 would certainly have been faster in day to day conditions.

I would love to know how it got registered as a '72 2.4 despite having the original VIN and engine. Maybe DVLA can be persuaded to change the details, but you will need certification from Porsche to do that.

Good luck

The 2.4L engine puts out 20 HP more power than the 2.0L.

I submitted the V5 this morning with my details and applied for a history check on the car to see if it sheds any light on things!

DVLA say if I write a covering letter with all my queries on they will investigate them.

I think i'll just get on with the restoration as soon as I can and see if I can get it onto the correct year letter when the time comes.

But hey after all I finally got a 911, Just can't wait to drive her!

Thanks to all for your replies

Darryl

P.s. I went for a ride in the last air cooled 911 to be sold in the UK (or so the owner tells me) last week! That was an imprsssive car! but I still like the old ones more!

I see you have become a bit cynical :-) I think you will be happy with your car after all it IS a 911. I would tell the PO that he missled you though..maybe a little cash back will ease your pain!
