Which of these 993s would you buy?
I'm considering PPIs on 2 C4 cabs with comparable mileage (just over 60K). One is a 96 and one is a 95. All things being equal (which of course is never the case) is the 96 a smarter buy? I see that they have a higher black book value - my concern is the carbon build up issue. I don't intend to chip the car and I doubt that I NEED the additional power of the varioram as I'm used to the 247HP of my former 964. Incidentally, the price is $35K. Second question - if I can force myself to wait until the winter, will I be able to find a MUCH better deal on a cab? Having it now is probably worth a $1500 premium to me.

Weren't the 1995 the ones with the bad wiring harness? ala-recall?

Yes - the 95 I'm considering had the recall done by the owner.

The engine wiring harness recall affected some 96's, too. It's not a bad thing...Porsche took care of the owners (after some coaxing). $35k for a 60kmile '95 993 seems a little high. But condition, records, options, etc. may make this worthwhile. Prices may drop a few $k in the winter, but the economy may strengthen during that time, so who knows for sure about the resale values then. I've heard differing opinions about Varioram and OBDI vs ODBII. Don't really know which is better.

On the German Porsche board that I attend it seems that people favor the 1996 of all 993s. The earlier 993s didn't have Varioram and the last 1997 993s had taller gearing thus not feeling as fast as the 1996s. So it seems a 1996 would be the "best". But what is "best"? What might be best for one person may not be best for another person. Go with the car that you like most (colour, spec, history & condition).
To me ANY 993 would be "best"

Didn't the 95's also have abnormal rear tire wear ?? (which was fixed with some suspension mods on later 993's).

green, I think (but don't know for sure) that the tire wear issue was resolved by doing an alignment using 96 specs. Hopefully someone more qualified may weigh in on this.

If I understand it correctly, the 95's had the same issue with carbon build up however the 96's trigger the check engine light (OBDII?) and this causes problems with the annual inspection.

Seriously, I would go with the 96. The tire wear can be corrected on the 95 by using 96 specs.
