MA Shaw Duck Tail vs GT Racing

Thanks to some fat lady in an Escort station wagon, I am in the market for a new duck tail. How was she supposed to stop with a dog by her feet, one on the seat next to her and a gallon sized soda in her lap? Nothing that $1600.00 and a trip to the body shop can't cure! Anyway...MA Shaw duck tail $450.00...GT Racing duck tail $350.00. Is there that much quality difference between the two? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks Darryl

I have heard that MA Shaw makes top notch pieces and sells a high quality product and I have heard of GT-Racing that they sell a good product for a race-car, but that for a street car the fit and finish is not ideal.

No experience, just what I've filed away in the back of my mind from everytime this question comes up here or on the Rennlist

In my experience, yes. Go with the MA Shaw for street car fiberglass. The GT racing is fine for a track car, but lacks a little attention to details for a street car IMHO.

Call Mike Shaw and talk to him. Did the same and its worth the extra $100 IMHO and his glass is on my car! He puts out a quality product with no shortcuts.

Just bought a MA Shaw thru pelican on a group purchase. Excellent quality/fit/finish. All mountings lined up first shot, which was a first for me in the fiberglass world.

I also got the Shaw tail in the group purchase. The mountings all lined up, but I have large gaps between the lid and the body from about the engine screen all the way down to the lower edge. The factory hardware for the engine screen also didn't fit well. The screws with the rectangle end were not long enough to reach through the fiberglass tabs on the new lid.

Any hints on how I can make a better fit?

Joeaksa 08-01-2003 06:13 PM

Jake,

Call Mike Shaw. If the fit is not correct he will want to know. With my parts he was very interested in how it worked in the field.

I have found few businesses that were as concerned with their reputation and quality as MA Shaw. Thats why I pay more to buy his product as he supports it and I have not found better quality.

i dont know about the gt quality, but i also bought my duck tail thru the pelican group purchase and was very impressed.a high quality piece. i was going to start a thread re: front and rear glass bumpers. ant thoughts guys.i would love to just be able to just bolt them on as easy as possible. good luck darryl!

I bought a used GT racing ducktail that I am working on right now. The lid hinge bolts line up perfect. Someone already drilled the holes for the lid latch, so no problem there. The lines on the sides and back edge would have lined up quite well if someone hadn't done some sanding and flattened the edges in a few places which is taking me some time to fix. The leading edge (closest to the back window bows up a bit higher than the sheet metal and there is no way to fix that.

I have GT Racing f/g bumpers on my 914, and whilst the quality is quite nice, there was trimming and drilling required to mount them, plus I had to supply a fair amount of hardware (including some non-garden-variety stuff to do it they way I wanted). So IMHO they are definitely "race" parts for professional installation or the serious DIYer.

I will be in the market for f/g or c/f lids a bit later and would appreciate any specific feedback on the MA Shaw decklids, or other competitors'.

I also got a MA SHAW duck tail in the group buy. Good quality. I just painted it yesterday and will be coulour sanding it on sunday or monday.
If you want pics, i will have some by tuesday, just email me at jeff_alton@telus.net. My only comment is that the gaps are not as small as on the rest of the car.

Ugh, bad timing on the front and rear FG bumpers. I'll need a set for narrow front and RS flared rear. But $$ are tough right now...grr.

Jeff Alton 08-04-2003 09:04 AM

Joseph, email me at home and I will send some pics. I just cannot seem to do be able to figure out how to post them on this forum.

Some folks that make CF pieces for PAGs race cars told me MA Shaw was good. I can't give out the name, but that's a pretty high recommendation.

rattlsnak 08-04-2003 07:08 PM

Two questions:
1. Who is MA Shaw and how to get a hold of him? (never heard of him)
2. When was this group buy and why didnt I hear of it until now?

Wayne 962 08-04-2003 07:19 PM

If you can find the thread, you can probably still order the tail for our discount price. Or just do a search in the field above...
