Bosch points
I was wondering if anyone else has had a problem with Bosch pionts lately. I've had 2 set fail me in a month . I just installed Echlins last night and the car runs fine again , so I'll see what happens with these . My mechanic said he's had a lot of problems with Bosch points and the Echlins will be fine. Can anyone tell if I'm fighting an underlying problem ? Thanks

What was your symtoms? why did they fail? What year car? The reason I ask I may have run into the same thing

Look at the rub block on the points that failed - are they white or brown? Bosch made a batch of points with white material that didn't hold up (I interpret it as maybe a teflon impregnated nylon that wouldn't take the heat from friction or just cold flowed and took a set after time). The old points and the new good ones have a brown rub block (probably a cloth reinforced thermoset material like bakelite). Which ones failed in your application?

Hi,
Not related to the points but more about Bosch quality; The ignition coil just after 3 years died again!! Years ago they were good for 10 years or so... Maybe since Bosch moved the manufacturing to Brasil quality has gone down the toilet... And the price is outrageous $200 US !!! Bye -J |

I have a 77s . The first time the points failed I was having a warm start problem because they were actually closing as they got hot and then 2 days ago the car just quit running . To Jim , both sets had the brown rub block . I'll keep you posted on the Echlins and also the Echlins will give your tach the jitters if you use a rev limiter rotor. Thanks Jim |
I just got rid of the points on my '73S and installed a Pertronix Ignitor. Works great.

How many miles were on the new sets when they failed? Is it possible that the phenolic wore down as they were breaking in and then the problem? If this were the case the points must have been misadjusted from the getgo. I can tell you that my points in my 914-6 conversion are perfect since new and that has a 2.7 in with bosch points. Are the installers using the supplied lobe grease that comes with the points? That could also be the key. Just some thoughts. Oh yes my problem appears to be unrelated to ignition think it is fuel pump.

Everything was done properly , as far as how many miles on the new set , I'd say about 250mi . I drove the car quite a bit today with a lot of start and stops and I never had a bit of doubt wether it was going to start and it seems to run smoother with the Echlins . I'm no kind of expert at this , I just know my comfort level with the car back where it should be. Ben , keep me posted on your performance with the Pertronix , I'm somewhat interested . Thanks Jim |
points have to wear in.. could be 1,000 miles with a greased new set before they cause problems without resetting........Ron
