1982 Targa - intermittent sputtering/power loss???
The 82 SC Targa starts and runs flawlessly 95% of the time. However, intermittent problems in the following scenarios:
1. Starts fine. 2. Regardless of the distance, cruising at any speed, my brother would downshift (again, regardless from 3 to 2nd, or 4 to 3, etc.), the car starts to sputter, lose power, sputtering causes tach needle to jump up and down, and finally dies. 3a. Waiting about 5 minutes, the car would sputter and would finally run again. 3b. If you wait for the engine to fully cool off, the car starts without sputtering (i.e., flawlessly). In either 3a or 3b, the car would perform again for days without problems. We are planning on replacing both braided-ground wires, fuel filter and fuel pump as our 1st step. Aaargh, I hate intermittent problems!!!!!!!!!!!! Any feedback? Thanks! |

Yeah don't let your brother drive your Porsche.
Does it also sputter for you when you drive the car or just for him. Could be his driving style. Sound like it could be a fuel delivery issue, do you know what the pressures are? When it sputter does it sound like it only running on a couple of cylinders or running on all the cylinders, but not getting enough gas. Last edited by ruf-porsche; 08-01-2003 at 09:45 AM.. |

LOL! Yeah, don't let him drive the car. Actually, I bought it for him so he stops borrowing mine (har, har, har).
He could not tell me if the sputtering either sounds like 'all cylinders' or 'few cylinders.' Can't blame him as the problem occurs while cruising. Yeah, it sounds like a fuel delivery system; hence, our plan of replacing the pump. We do not know the pressure but although cost-inefficient, we'll initially go with replacing the pump (heck, it is an 82 and you are going to replace that crap anyway). Anybody else out there! |

Put a new filter when you replace the fuel pump, and maybe check to see if the screen in the fuel tank is clog with debris. Last edited by ruf-porsche; 08-01-2003 at 11:25 AM.. |

Yeah, he had the guts to borrow my newly rebuilt-motor 911 for 1 month as a birthday gift. What can I say to that request. As for the filter, that is planned. BUT **THANKS *** for the advise of checking the 'screen in the fuel tank.' Where is the screen located (under the tank?/above?/left side?right side?)? Is this a major task? Thanks! |

Yeah we're a couple of Lotus guy. I think at one time we had more Lotus than the Lotus dealership in Chi-town.

My 83 did something similar. It ended up being the wiring harness between the distributor (carrying the ignition signal pulse) to the CD box. The tach is fed off the same signal. It would open up when warm only to run perfectly when cool. You can check it with a ohm meter, iirc there's a troubleshooting doc on the permatune web site.

If it only happens warm, the fuel accumulator is another possible culprit, although I think that is usually for hot start rather than hot run issues.

Also, check the fuel pump relay (red one) and the fuel pump fuse in the front fuse box. If they are overheating due to corrosion, you will get the same problems as you described.
