Major maintenance results in new car
Just got the Pcar out of the shop after two weeks. In short, an amazing difference in ride and power. Here is what I had done:
- oil and tranny fluid, castrol and swepco - set ignition dwell and timing, adjust fuel mixture - Koni adjustable inserts in front and Koni adjustable shocks in back. The suspension had not been touched in 30 years - fuel filter - new voltage regulator to get rid of that pesky glow - full alignment, and it is really dialed in now - shifter cup, rod and bushings - fixed annoying grinding speedo, new cable etc... - valve adjustment - surfaced upper covers and resealed, car now does not leak a drop - torqued heads and rocker shafts, all head studs are tight and these are the original ones! - installed new 930 lower covers, ok maybe this was a bit excessive but what the hey When I drove it home I realized just how off it had been in power, smoothness and handling which is now really tight and responsive. I feel like I'm driving a new 30 year old Porsche. Its a good feeling. Wifey didn't even complain about the bill...hmmm must bring flowers.

Jamul,
I think that my first 911 needed ALL of these same things when I bought it, as well... It took me a while to get them all sorted (you left out front ball joints and tie rod ends, may be next if not already done) Bottom line - this work is the difference between a good driving and good handling car, and one that is only a step above a genuine POS... keep these things up now, and you will always enjoy time behind the wheel... ![]()

I've looked at all the receipts from original owner (I'm second owner for 4 years now) and he had the routine stuff done but I think this is the 2nd valve job its had (only 41K miles on it but I guess its a little overdue). The suspension is really the biggest difference as the original Boges were getting a little tired and mushy which you could really tell in hard cornering. The engine getting a tune up and all that goes with it is night and day also. I would have taken great pleasure in doing all of this myself but my checkbook skills far outweigh my wrench skills. And as the car is unrestored I would just as soon give to the pros.....besides its good for the economy
