Why is my VDO quartz clock so noisy????

I just acquired another '73 911. Clock didn't work so I was starting to remove it, but then I noticed the black power lead was not connected in back. I connected it, and voila, the clock works. However, it is so noisy that it became clear to me that the PO had simply disconnected it.

So what does it mean when a VDO quartz clock makes constant noise (a whining sound)?? Time to get a new one, or send it off to North Hollywood for repair? Any pointers are appreciated. Thanks!

Are you sure it's a quartz clock, and not the ones with the little motors inside?

TSNA,

I don't follow what your post is trying to convey.

Wayne,

I assume it is quartz, as it says so right on the face. Moreover, it is identical to the quartz clock in my Euro.

Still looking for answers as to why my clock is sooo loud. Bueller, anybody????

Mine (also a '73) is pretty loud as well but it's a clear mechanical ticking sound. Give's me nice nostalgic feeling :-)

Probably just valves that need to be adjusted.

Mine is noisy too. Then I start the car and can't hear a damn thing!

Based on the noise they make and the lack of longevity, "VDO Quartz" must mean "Cheap, expendable device" when describing the clock.

My wife used to ask what was wrong with the "VDO Quartz" clock in my VW Rabbit when it was new.

Somethings they just never did get right - and this is one of them.
