Ducktail: Prep for Painting, Lots of Pictures
Well a few Pelican heads asked that I take some pictures as I got my used GT Racing ducktail fitted and painted to my '86 Carrera. When I got the tail I discovered someone had gotten a bit carried away with a belt sander and I need to fill the sides and lid edge with filler (in some places up to 1/4") to bring the lines back out straight.
First the materials needed:

Well after filling and sanding, the lines didn't look quite right so I installed the lid latch and put the ducktail on the car. As you can see the lines are way off!

So I decided to work with the ducktail on the car:
After a couple of more hours of work, things lined up much better!

Now time to paint the primer! I use a Devilbiss HVLP Finish Line gun (purchased at Harbor Freight) with gun pressure set at 12lbs.
I kept the compressor in the garage with the airconditioning running to keep the air cool and dry, not sure if it made a difference: Next I used "Prep Sol" wax and grease remover and then a tack rag to get off the remaining dust:

It's hard to tell how "off" the lines are in the pictures. But if you look at a bunch of cars with ducktails, you'll find they are all "off". The available glass ducktails just don't fit right.
From the pictures your's looks about par for the course.

Time to spray!
After the primer is on you can see all the scratches and pinholes in the fiberglass that I missed: But spot putty and sanding will fix that!

Well that was all for last weekend. I use disposable liners in the paint cup so cleaning the gun is a breeze:
Finally, gratuitous Gruppe B pic!

Hey Kurt!
Thanks for the photos. Especially like the ones of the actual cans of product used- those are great reference. My Binks gun has the disposable bags too, and at first I thought they were a gimmick but they sure speed cleanup on little jobs...and you can shoot paint with the gun upside down. What kind of primer and paint system did you decide to go with? Lookin' good! -BG
