Ever paint your grilles?
No, I not talking about your Weber of Char-Broil for cooking. I am talking about the horn grilles and deck grill for my early car. Currently they are chrome, and I want them black to go with the "RS" theme that my car is transforming into. I am over budget (isn't everyone) and don't really want to buy new ones. Mine are in good shape, just the wrong color. What kind of paint should I use, how should I prep. them, etc.? Finally, is this a bad idea, and should I just try to find used ones or find someone wanting to trade, black for chrome?

I painted the engine lid grill on my '76. I just cleaned it up really well and sprayed it with Wurth's Matte Black. Worked like a charm and has lasted for over 6 years now and stil looks great.

Buy the later plastic ones. They weigh less so that helps your RS theme, will be new and won't shed flakes when hit by rocks or bugs.
Or buy the CF ones from MA Shaw or GT Racing or somebody like that -- they have no slats -- just nozzles for air flow. Sell the old chrome ones to some Concours guy. |
