What the heck? Trying put in an oil return tube and can't expand it? I put it together but it takes all of the force in the world to pull it apart. Even out of the car. It is very hard to pull apart. I mean like strong man compitition hard. I am no small guy either. Put oil on the seals? HELP!!!!!

Use two large vise-grips, and turn the tubes while pulling them appart. Did you grease the O-rings ? It is not difficult to expand the tubes like that. The difficulty is to expand them without ruining them with the vise-grips...

you don't need vice grips, what you do need is a silicon lubricant on the o-rings prior to sliding one tube into the other

Troy,
I placed one screw style hose clamp on each end of the expandable tubes and gently tapped on the hose clamp in order to drive the tubes into place. Lubed with assembly lube. No leaks from the area. Gently tapping in the opposite direction or using a wrench should achieve the same results.

I put oil on the inside O-rings, used vise grips. Like I said. Even out of the car. VERY hard to get them apart.

if you don't use a silicone paste in large quantity, they do what you describe. oil doesn't work. dow corning 111 is good stuff, but there are others. i use two pairs of extra long needlenose pliers, one to hold in the outer end so it doesn't come out of the cam tower, the other to expand and wiggle the other end into the case. easy with silicone paste.

Troy:
Are they the thin metal type or the thick billet aluminum type?? I used silicon lube on the inner 2 o-rings (thin) and on the outer (large green) o-rings called silglyd or something like that. The set I put on my prior engine was the thin metal ones and I used hose clamps on the ends (only snugged enough to keep from sliding) so a large screwdriver could be used to seat the o-rings. The second set (in the 3.2) are billet alum . . . far superior to the metal ones, went in with a little pursuasion, but much easier. Finally, but you probably know this, the oil drains from the head into the sump so you want the tube with the smaller outer diameter in the head, and the tube with the larger outer diameter in the block. This way the oil never flows against the seam.

Well, Well, Well, I knew you guys would help. Wrong lube seems to be the problem. Thank you very much. I'll take all the tips I can get. Arm is about to fall off at the moment though.

Marc, Thin metal. Removed a billet one. Not easy. Has not been a good car day.

Yep driver side. Closest to the front. Above oil line.

Be careful with the thin metal ones, you can pierce the tube if you slip with a screw driver and hit it or if you tighten the hose clamps too tight.
What I want to know is where did those 2 posts come from above JW, they weren't there when I posted the first time ![]()

Silicon lube is a MUST for this job. I wouldn't advice using vice grips. The hose clamp trick works great. One way to expand the tubes using the hose clamps is with an open-end wrench. (Tip from Joe A. in Phoenix)
The tube that gave me the most trouble, believe it or not, was the front passenger side tube. I couldn't find any leverage to expand the tube.
