Making Seat Mounts - Questions
I'm putting the car on a diet and I'm the only one who drives it, so I've decided to make up some fixed seat brackets to mount my recently acquired Recaro buckets.
Do any of you have ideas on materials? I know that some fixed shells (Sparco, Recaro, etc) offer either steel or aluminum brackets - Are aluminum reasonable for street cars? What Grade/Spec Grade 8 hardware all around I assume? Thanks for the help Andrew M

I have Brey-Krause side mounts in my car. Here's the link to the Recaro Pole position mounts. http://www.bkauto.com/porsche/r9062.php
I've had to drill some holes in mine and had to use a cobalt bits. The material is very hard. yes on the Grade 8 hardware as well.

andrew15,
I did the same thing when I had a pair of racing seats in my car. Worked very well for me. Without the original sliding mechanism and because of less padding on the seat I sat 2" to 3" lower. That means a lower center of gravity for the car and in my case a much more comfortable driving position. I also mounted the seat a little bit more to the right compared to the stock seat. You don't say how the brackets attatch to your seat - under or side mounts. On the ones I had the brackets were mounted under. I made the seat bracket from aluminium and used the original mounting holes on the car. You will have to adjust it a few times to get it right where you want it, so don't spend time on the looks of the brackets the first time if you are making them yourself. You may have to make another pair later. You will also have to tilt the seat into your position. I used heavy gauge steel washers between the front bracket and the seat to do this. If you decide to lower and/or strengthen the seat mounts on the floor by cutting and welding, watch out for the fuel lines and electrical wires.
