Anyone know the size of the Fuel Tank Plug....Torx or Hex???
Need to drain my fuel tank and clean the fuel screen. Anyone know the size torx...or is hex tool to remove the plug? Thanks in advance!!!......I did it 2 years ago...with a neighbor...was his tool...and now I can't remember!

I did mine last year on my SC, I think it was 19mm hex but I'm not positive.
I used a short 1/2" (i think) bolt and two nuts that fit in the hole. I doublenutted the nuts on the bolt so I could get a real good grip with a long wrench. Like I said I'm not positive but I think it was close enough to 3/4" to work. BTW, I went all through that hassle for nothing, the screen was spotless. |

I believe it's closer to 22mm; I seem to recall one can make a wrench using the hex head of a 14mm bolt (21 mm across the flats) with locked double nuts. Put your regular wrench on one of the double nuts. Jim

I just measured my homemade tool as Jim described, it is 22 or 20. I can remember which end I used, but I have to get the car up on the lift later tonight so I can verify.

Thanks peeps. As I recall, my neighbor also fashioned a removal tool from spare bolts, etc. from his garage. Now I wish I kept it! But isn't there a true tool to do the job? What the heck is it!

I seem to recall that I used a 7/8in wrench size bolt and pipe wrench

Mike,
I found my old strainer last night (didn't have time to get the car up due to my recent fuel/air/ign headache), and put my homemade tool in it. 22MM. Best thing to do is get a new strainer and go to ACE or NAPA with it to test, as the bolts/nuts may be hard to descript to the counter people. Make sure to drain/run the car to get as much gas out as possible before you drain the tank. I thought I have 2 gallons left and ended up with 7 gallons!!! A gallon of it on the floor of the garage! Thanks guys....It took a few trips back and forth to the hardware store, but I got a working combination. I more than appreciate the help!
Also, today I did an oil/filter change, fuel filter, cap, rotor, plugs and checked the timing. Tomorrow I may attempt to adjust the valves. I already have the gapping tool, extra blades, gaskets etc. Basically I am trying to do a major service before having the car smogged on Monday. I will be posting a new thread on smog check adjustment tips later tonight. Thanks to people like you, the maintenance cost of owning a 911 isn't much worse than most 20 year old cars, and a lot more fun!
