Smile I'm back on the road again! It was the chip.

We got a new chip from Cyntex to replace the old Cyntex chip. Idle problem (mostly) gone. It now has a slight but manageable swing but no longer dies at stoplights. I will probably change to a different chip later. Maybe Steve Weiner at Rennsport can burn me one.

The Varioram is working! You can hear it engage at about 5,200 RPM. It clearly extends the power band.

I have a diagnostic port hooked up now. You can pick up an OBDII port from any car, they are all standardized. There are 4 wires to connect, a power lead, a ground, and two data lines. Mechanic says it was easy to do. He will provide more specifics after I talk to him next week. Interesting that my OBDI motor is now giving real-time data through an OBDII data port.

I did a compression and leakdown. 190 in all cylinders. Leakdown uniform and very tight. (Thanks for the motor, Harald!)

I really need to get busy on my exhaust project. The "custom" unit I have is a POS. It is already leaking and cracked.

The car is running great. I am so thrilled to be back on the road.

I think Moses deserves an endurance trophy just for the amount of debugging his DME has required.

Moses, i took my car for a maiden voyage, see if this sounds like your problem, idle swngs up and down, hesitates when you hit the gas, stalls when pushing in the clutch at speed, but if i tap the throttle as i push in the clutch it idles, put have to light hit the gas and will idle smooth, i also have a cyntex chip, my car also smells rich, Kevin

Sounds like the same problem.

At first, my car had NO idle problems. It was PERFECT. The wild idle instability was sudden onset. The motor compression felt different too. Now the idle problem sounds just like yours. Before it was much more severe.

I know my POS "custom exhaust is cracked and leaking after 200 miles. I feel pretty sure that when I fix the exhaust leaks my idle will stabilize. ( I think the compression change I felt was the exhaust leak.)

Because the idle was perfect before, I'm sure I can get it there again. At least now it's driveable.

Thanks Bill! Your advice and direction have been really helpful. I'm a little pissed that you put a 3.8 in your car. Now mine is always going to be your cars "little brother"!

Bill, if my latest exhaust inspiration backfires, how to I get a set of B&B headers with 964 crossover and 911 outlets? Can I order from Pelican or is it a custom setup?

The B&B w/ 964 heat in and 911 heat out just needs to be ordered that way, it is(or at least was) just something you had to ask for. Talk to Wayne. Besides the 964 heat pipes you will need to modify the engine sheetmetal where the heat pipe goes thu. 993 is a bit different from 964, it's not a big deal and the whole thing w/ Thom's RS heat tube all makes for a very nice sanitary setup. The flowmaster muffler is also a good match it's not quiet by any means, neither is it tiring on a trip or overpowering(in normal driving), I've been meaning to do some recordings w/ my fancy new mini mp3 ripper, but haven't gotten around to it.
