Soft window targa decision
Hello,
here's my dilemma, I have two options: 1- 1967 Porsche 911L soft window targa, no rust, original, fuchs, tools, jack. It don't have the original 2.0 engine but a newer 2.2. Condition is good to very good. Asking price $8500 2- 1968 Porsche 912 soft window targa, completely original, low miles (60.000), needs body restoration & painting, no major rust but holes in floor pans. $3500 What is your opinion, based on costs to bring the 912 to perfect condition and the later quotation of both models. The 911L it's a very rare model, only in 1967 as substitute of the 911S that was not imported to us in 1967. But the engine is not original so... I'm waiting for your opinions. THANKS !! Josep |
Josep,
It has been shown time and again the the costs to bring a 912 back to life are no less than those for a 911. The actual value of the car will NEVER equal that of the 911, however, so unles you REALLY REALLY REALLY prefer the 912 (due to some childhood trauma or whatever) WHY not have a 911?? From your description of the two cars in question, it appears that you will easily spend enough on the 912 to equal the cost of the 911 in short order, then what do you have? A 6000 dollar 912 with 8000 to 9000 invested, or more if you get carried away with paint, interior work, engine and trans overhauls, etc... I am admittedly biased, but I say 911, no contest...YMMV |
I'll second that, Josep. Bill is right.:D

Josep,
Was that a typo -- the year of the 911L? They were only '68 models! Not that collectible ... but, still more fun than a 912 with a rusty floor pan! Should have the 5.5" x 15" Fuchs Wayne is so enamored of ... Which 2.2 engine does it have? |
Hello,
my fault, the 911L is 1968. Josep |
I'd go for the 911 - mostly because of no rust.
|
yep the lack of rust is a big deal and the fact that it already has the boxer 6 in it. I'd go for the 68 911
|
I'd go with the 68' 911L for the condition reasons. I would have gone for the 912 in this scenerio if it had been the car in better condition because to me a short wheelbase soft window Targa isn't about high performance. It's falls more in the 356 world of attractiveness.
I always thought it would be nice to have a 69' Soft Window 912. |
soft window decision
Go for the 911L and enjoy the envy of all other 911 targa owners who see you cruzin with the rear window folded down!
