Clutch helper spring installation secret
Well, it's not really a secret as much as a better explanation of the re-install of the horseshoe/omega clutch helper spring. The Pelican tech article, 101 Projects and most of the previous threads about this repair give very clear directions on how to get the assembly apart cut off the old spring and put the new spring back on. I found information on re-installing and tensioning of the spring somewhat unclear.
This step is really very simple and safe if done the following way. After reassembling the spring on its pivot post on the arm, slide the arm back home up on the clutch arm shaft. Swing the arm slightly toward the front of the car while you are sliding it up the shaft. Twist the omega spring up under the arm where it will slide on to its post very easily. Note – there will be no tension on the spring at this time and it will be sitting up under the arm instead of resting in its normal position next to the heat exchanger. If the arm on your car is the type with a pin used to hold it on the main shaft, now is the time to drive it back in. Now here is the part that moves the spring to its normal position. You can use a large screwdriver or other prying tool, but I used a wooden hammer handle. Place your prying tool of choice in front of the arm while still holding it on the main shaft. Being very careful with your finger placement, slowly pull back with the prying device and without too much pressure, the arm will pop back to its normal position aft and the spring will magically flip around to its home next to the HE. Continue on re-installing the rest of the parts, adjust you linkage and you’re back in business. Cheers, Mark |
