Does the valve gap get wider or tighter as the engine warms up? In more practicle terms, should my 1973 2.4 valves be quieter at 230 degrees than they are at 180 degrees? I just finished a valve adjustment and the valves seem noticably noiser at 180 degrees than at 230 degrees. Is this normal? I didn't notice this prior to the valve adjustment (I wasn't listening for it however). Thanks

Tighter. Metal expands with heat. Some valve noise will always be present. If not I would be worried the valves are adjusted too tight.

I am following these valve clearance threads with interest. I have noticed my motor's clicking is more pronounced with motor up to normal temp than when I first start up. I would expect things to quiet down after heating up. Is'nt the point of the clearance to allow for heat expansion and to ensure valves close all the way.
I rushed last weekend and set mine too loose and will redo this weekend properly. It's just odd that it's only noticeable when motor hot. If it's my valve guides, why is'nt oil blowing past like a DDT fogger? Sorry no answers here; just wondering... Bob
