If it's not under the rear grill, then it's under the front compartment, not the best place to transfer heat, but AC was an afterthought in the early 911s.

Right under the air grill attached to the underside of the rear deck lid; primary.

Secondary is right behind the front bumper under the car; there is a fan in the trunk next to the battery to blow air over that condenser. (Some cars did not have this condensor.)

If you don't have one under the rear grille you may not have A/C, maybe removed at some point, or you may have some very different aftermarket setup.

Also, the evaporator is in the smuggler's box in the front trunk (compartment behind the spare - open the lid and look). Some aftermarket systems have the evaporator in front of the passenger's feet under the R floorboard.

Thanks for the info, it looks as if the condenser was in the rear, butalso looks as if it would interfer with the heating duct that that runs over theengine fan,Norm

It shouldn't. It's bolted tight to the lid and is only a bit over an inch thick.

Actually, on my '80, the hose rubbed slightly on the condenser.

On my '78, it doesn't rub.

Norm,

As noted above, the main condenser is on the engine lid. Please provide a picture of your engine room and lid and we may be able to tell if there ever was one there.

"also looks as if it would interfer with the heating duct that that runs over theengine fan."

The '76 cars equipped with factory installed A/C or with properly installed aftermarket systems used two reducers and a smaller size air hose in this area to eliminate condenser interference. Said parts (reducers and smaller diameter hot air hose) can be found in the official Porsche parts catalogs.

None of the condenser locations are ideal. If possible, add some fans to promote heat transfer. Many owners replace the factory York compressor with a more efficient Sanden or ???

Is there a suitable serpentine condenser for this application?

Perhaps I shouldn't have made a blanket statement regarding the superiority of serpentine condensers. It all depends.

".....AC Condenser can be either a parallel flow or serpentine flow heat exchanger. In a parallel flow ac condenser, one tube contains warm fluid while the other contains cold fluid. Because they are aligned to each other, the fluids flow in the same direction and heat is transferred from the warm fluid through the surface of the tubes to the other side. A serpentine flow AC condenser on the other hand streams in rather opposite directions. The turbulence caused by the serpentine flow heat exchanger assures the greatest temperature differential between the heat exchanging fluid streams."

Hope this helps (confuse or clarify).
