Screw the 3.2, I'm going to find a way to wedge this into my 914...

Suggestions are welcome:

"Bore - just under 3'2" (965mm). "...

It is a 3'2" LOL

targa80 08-13-2003 12:15 PM

What would a thrown rod sound and look like when at speed?, I would want to be at least a mile away.

Tim Walsh 08-13-2003 12:24 PM

isn't think a wtlw? either way it's really cool. Thermal efficency over 50% and a redline of 100RPM?!

Overpaid Slacker 08-13-2003 12:40 PM

The suspension might need some tending to, but it'd be one hell of a cool stainless steel exhaust system.

Superman 08-13-2003 12:46 PM

You'd need stiffer springs in the back, to accomodate the extra weight.

pwd72s 08-13-2003 12:51 PM

THere would be your difficulty, Wayne. I don't think there is a 914 tach with a 100 rpm redline...;) The horsepower sounds adequate, though..

Jared at Pelican Parts 08-13-2003 12:57 PM

What do they use this for? Ocean liners?

arcsine 08-13-2003 12:59 PM

The biggest problem I see other than suspension issues (How do you suspend 4 million pounds?) is having to lug arond the fuel tank as a trailer (1600 gal/hr burn rate). Besides the engine alone has a weight to power ration of 44:1 which is not stellar.

Have you thought about a blown Chevy 350 in the front of the 914 as an option?

Jared at Pelican Parts 08-13-2003 01:07 PM

How do you start it? You'd need an APU off a jet!

VincentVega 08-13-2003 01:10 PM

Picture this in one of Waynes future books....

Note the raceware headstuds. :)

Wayne, more realistically, you ought to dump one of these in the back

600+ hp should about do it

Rick Lee 08-13-2003 02:10 PM

I wonder how they'd build a cool collar for that engine. I'm sure someone will think of something.

thabaer 08-13-2003 02:12 PM

Just make sure you get the updated one that makes better power at 104 rpm.

Schuey 08-13-2003 02:26 PM

actually, someone listed their 914 on your site here wayne, and it has a V-8, some serious power coming from that one...I know the purists will be horrified, but I wasn't...it's just a Gruppe B

Martin3.2 08-13-2003 02:42 PM

Texaco would be happy with you Wayne :D

cstreit 08-13-2003 02:49 PM

That is CLEARLY a ferrari 12 cylinder engine in the making. Those are Enzo's gnomes working on it that only make it look big. :D

Child labor was outlawed, gnomes are not protected.

Free the gnomes!

They even threw some Korean writing in the backround to throw off the APFTC (Assoc. for Protection of Fairytale Creatures)

beepbeep 08-13-2003 03:08 PM

Hehe...that's cool! I believe Juan works with those big diesels...he could probably chime-in about them.

Talking about complicated machines, don't forget Deltic diesel previously mentioned on PP:

jim72911t 08-13-2003 03:24 PM

Nah, too undersquare. That thing'd never rev when you took it to the track. :D

It probably does okay in the torque dept, however.

Jim

I used to work on stuff like that when I still had hair. it was neat but I don't really miss those days.

john70t 08-13-2003 06:47 PM

Here's some more ideas:

http://www.tpub.com/engine3/en3-18.htm opposing cylinder engine

aschen 08-13-2003 08:35 PM

I wouldent be suprised to learn MB is thinking about putting one of those daddies in an upcoming amg baged car. Damn german luxury car manufacturers are in a definate horsepower war these days. how about an sl 90000. The sl stands for super light of course!! and the 90000 is for hp.

red-beard 08-13-2003 08:49 PM

Hmmmm. Enron may still have a couple of Frame 7F Gas Turbines laying around, slightly used.

One'll make around, oh maybe, 210,000 hp...

Course you'll need a bigger fuel tank.

banjomike 08-13-2003 09:15 PM

at its point of maximum efficiency it consumes 13,843 lbs/hour of diesel fuel!!

Wayne 962 08-13-2003 09:32 PM

That kind of stuff makes me think about how little I really know about things in this world...

jazzbass 08-13-2003 10:11 PM

100RPM! You'd have to run it through the transmission backwards (and shift 5-1) to gear it UP for the road. That is unless you like a top speed of about 1.89 mph at redline.

Paul Franssen 08-14-2003 06:39 AM

So, if I calculate this right, this engine consumes about
271.5 metric tons (271527 kilos) of, I guess, heavy or intermediate fuel oil per 24 hours (at nominal max. continuous output).
That's a lot (but then, it probably is a very favorable figure)!

304065 08-14-2003 07:19 AM

Why piston? Why not a turbine for an application that big?

Jared at Pelican Parts 08-14-2003 08:39 AM

I like that opposed piston motor. If I remember right those were the motors used in the Luftwaffe Junkers bombers during WW2. Kinda hard to believe that those things actually worked. Diesel Supercharged. I wonder how high of compressiobn that thing ran?

Im still wondering how they get that first motor to start. You would need a jet to get it turning. then at the rtight moment, inject fuel and fire it up. can you imagine how LOUD that thing must be?

turbo6bar 08-14-2003 12:09 PM

What could this engine do with a turbocharger?

beepbeep 08-14-2003 12:59 PM

Jared: if you talk about Deltic, it was used in locomotives and boats and developed after WWII by british company. Actually, boat that Martin Sheen rides in "Apocalypse Now" is powered by small 9-cylinder Deltic. It wasn't too hard to start at all...just a small turn and off it goes.

Turbo6bar: Big diesel engine Wayne showed does use a turbocharger (probably one per cylinder). Actually, all big 2-stroke diesels depend on turbochargers to properly purge exhaust-gases from cylinders.

Jared at Pelican Parts 08-14-2003 01:03 PM

beepbeep, I was actually reffering to the huge engine at the beginning of the thread. How do you start that!?

Speaking of diesels, my dad recently bought a 6.2L Banks turbocharged GMC crewcab dually with a utility bed. This thing is AWESOME. it was a ex-L.A. County Fire Dept. truck he got at auction. It's funny, with the Banks on there, it pulls like a regualr truck, almost no lag. It's eveng ot a 4 speed with a granny gear!
