opinions on an odd color

I just drove a 1980sc euro. Very nice. Every upgrade and then some. Strong runner. I hate to say it, but what really bothers me is the color. The euro's call it champaigne. It's not terrible, but it's not great. The finish is so perfect I would not consider repainting it. Has anyone heard of any horror stories of trying to sell an "off color" Porsche. (just thinking down the road, I would probably sell it eventually for a newer model) I really like the car, the owner bought it in Germany in 1984 and you can see it has been his baby. Just that #@x! color. any thoughts?

I kind of like the champagne although you are right, it would not be the first choice of colors I would look for. I like the lighter colors as they stay cooler inside and they stay looking clean longer. I think that this color might adversely impact resale price in the future, but probably not by too much. Also, when you sell it potentially years down the road the paint would most likely be a little less perfect then, and perhaps the new owner would not mind getting it repainted in their idea of a perfect color.

I've got to admit that color means much less to me than other characteristics/features of the car. It sounds like you might have found a winner of a vehicle. I would definitely go for a solid and clean vehicle of a less-than-desired color than the other way around.

Champagne and similar colors are everywhere these days, honda's, Lexus, Cadillac, you name it, most companies have it or something very close.

You should be fine as long as it's not Mary Kay Pink...

If YOU don't like the color, don't buy it. Find another car. It's that simple.

When I bought my Smokey Quartz Metallic 911, it was not a color I would have chosen. Hard color to describe. Like a metallic bronze. Metallic baseball glove. Slight rose hue. Slight grey patina.

But now, I am deeply in love with this color. A chameleon, different at night than during the day. Classy/formal, especially at night, but still wash-n-wear. For a darker color, it hides dirt wonderfully. Nearly invisible to folks holding radar and laser guns.

Odd color, what odd color?

I’m convinced that the paint guy at Porsche in the early ‘80s was on some really good stuff. I thought my color was very unique and I liked it the first time I saw it. After over six years I’ve come to love it.

If you don’t like the color at all now, it will bug you latter but there is something cool about the odd colors, IMO.

Odd color? Did someone call my name? At first I really didn't like the sepia brown on my car but it's slowly grown on me to the point that I don't think I'm ever going to change it. Everyone has changed their sepia brown cars red. I think it's time to keep one it's original color. Out of the several hundred 911's I've seen I haven't seen a single other car with this color on it. I love it.

Crayola should make a box of 911 colours! At night it looks white, so much so that people can't believe that its blue.

I think that is champagne (correction - platinum) metallic though.

I like it.

I kind of like that color. I remember when my dad and I were looking for his 911. We found this espresso brown targa in PERFECT condition. We both didn't know about the color at first, but it started to grow on us. We eventually overlooked it because the car was in such perfect condition. I now like it as much if not more than my silver SC because you hardly ever see another one like it. I would say go for it.

On a totally different subject, why do most people block out thier license plate numbers when posting pictures on the board? It's not like a social security number that can be stolen is it?

In my many years of vehicle ownership, I owned two cars that were real gems (at the time) and that I sold way too soon. Why? They were weird colors for the cars, and I never could warm up to them.
Think I'm kidding? How about an '81 320i, low miles, factory alloys, perfect tan cloth, obsessive PO, cold air, smooth shifting, and....sepia brown? I managed to keep it for two years, though.
The '72 MGB (small bumpers, dual carbs, straight and rustfree) in SCREAMING BRIGHT AFTERMARKET YELLOW that I owned fresh out of college only lasted 6 months. Should've painted that one, though....
Point is, be sure you like the color before signing the papers.
(BTW, Platinum metallic & Arctic Silver)

Yep!

BTW, I searched for about 1.5 years, for a Silver & Platinum metallic where at the top of the list.

I'm pretty happy with it.

I had a pink (Rasberry) 1972 911 S, one of the few cars I wished I still had.

I've mever had a new car in my life, and therefore I've never really chosen my color. I had a camo landcruiser (loved it), blue Golf (liked it even when it was faded), gold golf (didn't much like it), Burgundy 944 (grew on me), and a gold, sorry, and a platinum metalic 911 (not my first choice but the car is great!). In my opinion it isn't the cosmetics that matter. I got mine because the POs had all taken really good care and done numerous of those recommended upgrades over the years. I don't care that the paint is in lousy condition, it doesn't reduce the fun of a 60mph downshift to third then running it up to redline while passing. In fact judging from my previous cars, maybe I should paint it camo! Uh, on second thought...

Truely the paint condition is the biggest factor on how nice (or crappy) a color will appear.

When I was shoppin for a 911, I came across a few poorly cared for dark browns. I though *this* is the most hideous color ever put on a 911. . . . they looked like a Hershey bar gone bad. (or worse)
Since then, I've seen quite a few impressive, shiney examples.
condition, condition, condition. (Okay, I suppose "camo" might be an exception.)

I sort of like that color. Especially on the car above - with the lake and mountains in the backround. The polished Fuchs really set it off.

I have a 1983SC that is Quartz Grey color,to my knowledge Porsche only used this color in 83 for the 911 and 83-84 for the 928,when I first saw it I fell in love with it but thats me.Many people like colors that are bright and others like subdued, its whatever you are happy with. The most important thing in my opinion is get the nicest Porsche your budget allows and that you like, these cars are addictive and you MAY be buying a car that you will hang on to for a long, long time.Enjoy
