Shock upgrade question(s)

I just installed Bilstein "Sport" shocks today; I had the "HD" ones previously. To make sure we're on the same page, these are the yellows; I had the greens.

They seem to have raised the car about 1/4"-1/2", but I was expecting that.

With the stiffer shocks, should I tighten up or loosen the rear sway bar? How about the front - I have Bilstein "HD" s on the front. The sway bars are TRG "A"'s in the front and "B"s in the rear.

I haven't yet had a chance to test them out, but next Tuesday I'll be @ Thunderhill.

If the overall balance of your car is good, and you want it to stay the same, then you'll need to back off the rear bar or stiffen the front bar. This is because the rear Sports have stiffened the rear up and the fronts have stayed the same.

Having said that, I don't think that you should use that mix for a track car. The HD front, Sport rear set-up is more of a street ride/handling compromise. From what I've seen of your car, I don't think this is an issue with you. The Sports up front are great, and still have a decent ride.

If you are looking for better turn-in and quicker transient response, you'll want more rebound stiffness up front. That's one of the reasons I like the Koni Sports, since you can adjust them to stiffen up rebound for a given track. The Bilstein's can be revalved to your specs as well. If it were my car, I'd get some Bilstein Sports for the front that are revalved for stiffer rebound. The ride will suffer a little, but the car will slalom like a tailback.

Hmm. From conversations I'd had with 911 people who'd ridden and driven my car, the consensus seemed to be that I should stiffen the rear. I can always put the greens back on if I don't like it.

Now, IIRC, to soften the bar, I slide the drop link closer to the bar's mount/pivot point, correct? Or is it the other way?

Thanks!

If your car was too soft in the rear, then that combo will be fine I suppose. I've just found HD's to be total mush for the track. YMMV. I'd really have to drive your car to really know what it's definciencies are.

I really don't know what your set-up is, so it's hard to give recommendations. What exactly are you trying to cure?

If you want to soften the swaybar, you slide the adjuster closer to the end of the bar, making the effective swing arm length longer.

I had HD's (green) on the rear, and replaced them with sports (yellow)

One problem I was having was bottoming out in the rear under hard cornering, particularly if I hit the berm.

I thought that moving the ends out was the right direction, but it had been a while since I'd played with it.

I'm about to the point where I need professional help on suspension; right now I'm just making a change, driving around and making guesses as to whether it's an improvement (insert redneck guffaw sound here).
