Production Number 1971 T's

Hello there,

Can someone tell me the production numbers for 1971 T’s. I’ve got from other sources that 15,082 were made in total (not sure if this is accurate), but would like to know how this was split between Coupe, targa, sporto, and Karman.

Basically I’m trying to find out how many others 911’s were the same as mine : chassis no. is 911 110 1969. (my reference books, aren’t handy at the moment).

Also found the following numbers, but they’re no where near 15,082.

Type Numbers Chassis No.
Coupe 583 3476 US 9111000001 – 9111000583
Targa ? 9111110001 – 9111113476
Karman 1934 9111120001 – 9111121934

According to this . . . my car was built at the Karman factory . . . right? Don’t suppose anyone knows whether they only dealt with Coupes (which mine is), or whether it could be split down further.

Need to numbers for a show (they’re making up a details sheet)

Cheers Phil Johnson

According to the Red Book:
"T " = 583 + 1934 by Karmann + 3476 for USA; "E" = 1088 + 935 (Sportmatic) + 935 (Targas); S = 1430 + 788 (Targas). Total 1971 production is thus 10,234. HTH

According to 'Original Porsche' the sixth digit in the VIN is: 0=coupe, 1=Targa, 2=Karman built coupe. According the VIN you posted it is not a Karman coupe.

Are you sure you listed the correct VIN for your car? My source only shows 583 factory coupes, so 1969 falls well outside that range. What is the engine type number in your car? It is a 911/0X number. X would be either, 3, 6, 7, or 8.

I have always wondered about the 583 number. My project car(71 T Porsche coupe) is VIN 911 110 0591 which falls outside the range. I think there is a date specified for the 583 1971 T's through Dec. 1970. I have not seen a listing for the number produced after that month.

That number even deepens the mystery using Morgan's book. I don't see any engine numbers that list a '7' in the 4th spot for a '71 T engine. His book shows a 0=Rest of World 'T' engine, 4=US engine, 9=Sportmatic for RoW and US.

Check the engine type number, it is located about 2 inches away from the engine serial number on a horizontal surface toward the engine case.

Jamie,

That is interesting about your VIN number being higher than the stated range for Factory 'T' coupes.

Brian, I have been trying to track it down for some time. The only thing I can find is that one source ( I don't remember which) said there were about 900(from memory) Porsche body T's for the model year 1971. This would coorespond with the fact that I have seen the 583 tagged with the production up until Dec. 1970. What about the cars made in the spring/summer of 71? This could account for the difference in numbers.

I will check numbers in my limited library (stack o' books) when I get home.

Never mind, I figured out my mistake. The last four digits are the sequential engine number. Morgan's book lists US engines as 6114001 and onwards and all Sportmatics as 6119501 and onwards. So your engine type should be 911/07. Hope I got that right.

Jamie/Brian - the source of production figures for T's built up to the end of December 1970 is Porsche's Technical Specifications booklet for the '69-'71 models :

977 Porsche-built Coupes
1587 Karmann-built Coupes &
1523 Targas

Total figures for the '71 model year are not given since the booklet was produced in Mar '71 (1st edition) . Maybe there was a later edition printed which has the total numbers produced ?

9111102306 here, so still counting. Off the top of my head, I believe the engine number ends in 1177xx , but would have to check to confirm.

Interesting thread. I have yet to find any 2 sources with matching data on this year. I'm also curious how many are still alive.
