Porsche Crest Help!! With Early 911 T/S Trim

Hey guys,

I have a 72 911T that has a 75 2.7S Motor, S Suspension, S Sport Seats and has blacked out chrome. I just spent several weeks on rocker and longitudinal repairs and unfortunately have a slight mis-match on my rocker repaint. Since the car had a beautiful paint job done to it last year before I purchased it I am not going to repaint. My thought instead is to return the trim pieces taken from the car years ago. Since I already have what looks like an "S Car" I was thinking I would go with the wide 1 3/4" trim. The added bonus is the masking of 95% of my rocker repaint. What other options do I have? The car looks great without the trim but what the paint colour difference! Can I use a later style of rocker tim? Or should I just bite the bullet and buy all the new bits and pieces to complete the project? How many bits and pieces do I need? Some cars have fender trim, rocker trim, bumper end trim...whats my solution?

Thanks Guys!

if pictures will help I will gladly post some.

Pete

I would stick to the correct rocker trim (pre 73) with wide strip. If you cover most of the mismatch, you'll probably be fine since the metal top edge reflects light up and may disguise any mismatch showing above the part.

I HATE the later body color rocker trim on early cars.

There's a rubber strip, a metal rocker cover and two metal end pieces with rubber edge trim. Wheel arches were optional and I would only add if you have the attachment holes drilled in your wheel arch flanges, or if you really like them. They may be hard to find though.

The rocker trim piece is screwed in with sheetmetal screws, so you'll have to drill into your rockers. You could affix with 2-sided tape for a trial run to see how you like them. If you don't, list 'em on ebay.

I would go for the correct early rocker trim. Here's a shot of my car with the rocker trim and wheel arch trim.

(Warning - car appears much nicer in photos!)

Jeff, what color is that? Looks great, is it metallic?

Looks like a bluer version of slate gray.

Jared,

The color is a poor respray. That's why I put "31 footer" under my user name. Any closer and you can really see the defects! It appears it was actually a nice paint job but a previous owner left the car broken down outside in Texas for 7 years. Needless to say it pretty much shot the paint job. I believe the color is "glacier" blue. The car was originally Metallic Green - code 230. You can still find the green under the sunroof. It looks like an old matchbox car color. It's also the same green that Chuck's Gulf Blue 73 was when he started. I got ideas for the next color though.

I've got the new old stock rocker trim that you need, still in the original packaging. I'll sell it for $200 plus shipping. Email me if you want it.

End of sales pitch!!

There is very little OEM trim available for the early cars. From what I've found, most of it is made by Tasker Metal Products (TMP). Even the stuff Stoddard sold was from them, although in recent calls to them they are selling less of it than they used to - now they tell you to find some good used parts.

The fit and finish of the aftermarket stuff is generally good, however, remember that the cars are 30+ years old and even when they were new the trim may have not been up to today's standards.

How would you like to weigh all that trim on a postal scale and post the result here?

Ha ha, I though it was 20/20 vision. 20 feet, 20mph.

All the aftermarket deco I've gotten was of good quality except for the front bumper strip(3 piece rubber seperates and ends open up if not careful). Also compact the thin outer trim as much as possible to allow for shrinkage. Have a person help to avoid scratches. I had to elongate the side holes so it would stretch enough to be flush(mostly worked), made much stronger sliding studs out of welding and grinding M8 bevel screws through thick washers. Put the bumper on a painters stand, and after starting all the nuts and centering, started from center and tightened outward while pounding the bumper with a hammer to help it conform to the curve.
