what is a Carrera 3.0?

At our last auto-x, there was a Carrera 3.0 that was leaning heavily towards the outlaw side of life. 3.2 motor, flares and so on. Really a good looking car. Is a Carrera 3.0 a special 356? or something else altogether? I can't recall seeing that "model" for sale in any classifieds. Just curious....TIA

A Carrera 3.0 is a 911. When the standard motor was the 2.7 the high end model was the Carrera 3.0

A 356 is a different beast entirely from a 911, but There were "Carrera" model 356 (not with 3.0L).

Well, maybe thats it. It was a 356 body, maybe a D coupe?, but it was so tweaked it really had a different look. But I swear I've heard of a Carrera 3.0 that are 356 based? or is this just plain impossible because no such engine existed then?

Maybe someone shoehorned a 3.0 into a modded 356. A Carrera 3.0 looks just like an SC. They'll probably be moving faster too, so it might be hard to tell

Yep, not that common, and pretty pricey. From what I understand pretty darn complicated too.

Az, beautiful car, but about 20 years newer than Carrera I saw.

Steve, thanx, I'll have to do some more investigating elsewhere. So what I saw was an "outlaw" 356? very cool ride..

91C2Wrencher, yes the old Carrera 356s with the four-cam engine are rare. And valuable. And extremely fast. Very easy for a 356 to be well under 2000 lbs total weight, even with gas and driver....and the four-cam engine makes as much power as my slightly modded 3-liter SC engine. A four-cam 356 is a bully, even by today's standards.

Maybe you saw this:

Outlaw 356 3.0L Carrera.

Saw it at the swap meet at Hershey. I got more pics of it somewhere.

People can stick any badge on a car they want to. If a guy wants to call his 356 an F150, it's his prerogitive.

SCCA allows liberal mods to production class cars. FEnder flares, new suspension and the like. They only put a limit on the size of the engine before you jump classes. You may have seen a G production racecar with a later/upgraded engine being used for AX.

WOW! I believe that's the very car I saw last weekend! This board never fails to amaze me! Thanx, Marc-Andre

You may want to check out our club site www.rtr-pca.org for some photos of that beast in action. (nothing posted as yet from last weekend, but stay tuned)

Hardly. A 4 cam 356 Carrera struggles to break 9 seconds in the 0-60 sprint, and has maybe a 125 mph top end.

Not too many modern cars available (including Civics, Hyundais, minivans, etc.) that cannot handily smoke a 4 cam Carrera.

Also, what mods did you do to your SC to get it down to the 100 (early 356 Carrera) hp to 130 hp (later cars) that the 356 Carrera had??
Brian,

You are confusing the Carrera nameplate with the legendary Porsche 4 cam engines they put in the cars of it's time. A bit of history.

That's the same legendary 4 cam 356 engine that I am talking about.

100 hp for the Series I version, 130 hp for the Series II version. No bully and not fast by modern standards, any modern Honda, Buick, etc. will simply walk away from it. And, an SC would spank it with a spark plug or two disconnected.
Brian,

Always nice to learn something new.

Brian K. ... seems to have quite a bit of dis/misinformation to spout off about the 356's ...

There were more than just a couple of iterations of the 'Carrera' 4-cam engine ... including 1500 cc, 1600 cc, and 2.0 [1966 cc] versions spanning a range from 110 hp to 180 hp DIN ... matching the output of ALL 911SC models available in the USA!!! The 1963 Carrera 2 had the same Porsche-patented disc brakes featured on Dan Gurney's winning 804 F1 car! The '63 Carrera 2 also shared the same top speed [137 - 139 mph] of USA 911SC models produced 20 years later!

Perhaps this car might shed a little light on the disinformation ...
