Question 5th gear stuck

I've been playing a bit with my linkage since I've owned my car. I've replaced the clutch cable, the helper spring, the tranny oil, the bushings and installed a short shift kit. It's alot nicer to drive since I've done this, but I never quite got the linkage adjust exactly as I wanted it...until yesterday. I adjusted it a little because I was nicking reverse when downshifting from 5th. All of the gears are now WONDERFUL...except for 5th. She's catching on something (maybe reverse lockout) and gets stuck but I can eventually get her out. When I adjusted the linkage yesterday, I moved the position of the shifter backwards about an inch or so and really does make it shift better. I've had this same problem before when I've adjusted the linkage but I'm not quite sure how to correct it (assuming it's getting stuck on the reverse lockout) without just trial and error. Can anybody explain to me exactly what it's doing and how to resolve it with a small adjustment? Thanks guys...

here is the tech article on adjusting the shift linkage

were your shift bushings replaced? they can contribute to shifting problems if they're worn.

Hi Matt,
Have you been playing with the shift coupler found through the access plate in the rear floorboard? Here's my suggestion: loosen the 13 mm nuts and place the shifter lever itself all the way to the left against the stop in the neutral position. At the same time, reach back and physically make the coupler portion (tranny side) more or less 'centered' on top (it can rotate left or right with the bolts loosened). Tighten the bolts back and move through the pattern. If it still isn't feeling right, the rule of thumb is to experiment with the position of the shifter lever up and down between neutral and up in first gear, but always butted up against the far left when tightening the bolts back. Also, a little rotation either left or right of the coupler may help find your car's 'sweet spot'. Whenever I adjust mine, I usually will leave the access plate cover off for a day or two with the wrenchs laying in the floorboard back there if I feel I need to stop and make a little adjustment to make it perfect. Hope this helps. Helped my buddy in Little Rock fix his this past weekend as a matter of fact...his was getting a little stuck in fifth.

the shift handle must be centered in the housing when in neutral. pull up the boot and see. the little flipper which is the reverse lockout can hang things up if the handle position is off. sometimes the flipper digs a notch in the handle and it hangs in the notch unless you keep it pushed to the right as you take it out of 5th.

I had a very similar experience, and in my case it turned out to be the reverse lock-out. When I put it into 5th, the shifter lever wouldn't move "past" the spring-loaded lock-out. Instead, it would get jammed against the lever and it would feel "stuck" in that gear. It didn't want to move in any direction. I would get it out by pushing the lever forward until it the lock-out moved into the proper position.

It was frustrating to diagnose, and I eventually figured-out that it was the reverse lock-out. I applied grease to the lever & reverse lock-out, and that seemed to greatly help the situation. I hope your fix is as easy!

Thanks guys. I have done the thing where you leave the shift plate off and do little tweaks around town. I've also done the tech article for adjusting it. It's always pretty close, but yesterday it was the *****. It was just 5th gear ocassionaly getting hung up. But when it gets hung, almost nothing can get it out.

John, let's say everything is perfect (as it is) except for catching on 5th at times. If I were to hold the coupling still, which way would I move the shifter? Towards 5th gear?

Hey Matt,
If I understand you correctly, you want to hold the coupler steady and centered with your right hand while you push the shifter lever all the way to the left stop and then tighten the 13 mm bolts. Isn't that right, John? I defer to your greatness...

Well, that would depend upon what gear the tranny is in. I was just looking for the little "tweak" direction to move it slightly away from the reverse catch. Any ideas?

generally, i hold the handle all the way to the left, and adjust the coupler all the way to the right. that usually gets it. and center the handle in neutral, so it slips into the 5th/rev slot dead center. short shifters sometimes change the side to side throw of the handle just enough that some minor adjusting is needed, beyond the stock method.

Draw a couple dots/lines with a fine point Sharpie so you know where you started from, and make small incremental adjustments

Ok, I think I got it. I did a smaller adjustment to move the shifter forward about 1/4" and now I dont SEEM to have the 5th gear sticking anymore. Man, the coupling is p-i-c-k-y!
