Early Clutch Adjust
What's involved with adjusting the early clutches? The 101 book apparently only covers the later cars...mine is a 1968.
Any advice would be appreciated. My pedal needs to be all the way to the floor before I can shift into 1st or Reverse with grinding. Thanks, Scott

find the end of the cable at the transmission. At the end of the cable is a nut. I use a pair of vice grips to keep the cable from turning while tightening the nut. If you feel the pedal movement with your hand (back inside the car!), you should feel about 1 1/2 inches of play. This is from the pedal all the way out, to where you start feeling some resistance. If it is requiring you to push it all the way to the floor to shift, the play is probably quite a bit more than that. Keep tightening the cable until you get 1 1/2" or so. If you have to little play, the clutch will slip. Too much and it will grind. I have to give mine a turn or 2 every year to compensate for disk wear.
Don't forget to use jack stands to hold up the car!!!!

Actually you should have 1" of FORWARD movement from the rest position. All else, from my experience and from what I have been told, is correct. I know that sounds goofy but you should feel resistance right away from the "rest' position as you depress the pedal. However you pick up your slack on the FRONT of the pedal travel. About an inch forward of the rest position, in other words if you pull the pedal toward you. Weird huh?

whatever it takes to get a comfortable release position of say 3" off the floor. you don't want it to grab 1/2" off the floor, or way out at the end of the pedal travel. depending on the car and the clutch condition, the freeplay will vary, but you have to have some.

yeah I'm with John. The basics are here, but you have to play with it to get the right "feel" for you and the car.
