PPI on a RS clone
I have an agreement to buy a (I believe ) nice 73E converted to a nice RS "like"clone. It will be pending a PPI. Besides the usual PPI items (including compresssion/leakdown test any other thoughts on gremlins to look for?
The car has known rust behind the front fenders. See below for the description: 73 911 E RS "clean clone" The car is a 1973 911 E coupe. No sunroof, no a/c, no leather. It has recaro sport seats. The exterior is silver and the interior is black. Interior is in excellent condition including door panels and pockets. Driver's side door pocket is missing chrome trim around top of open pocket. The car has all S options except for the ducktail that is a glass unit. Euro lenses and H4 lights. Rear flares are correct factory RS flares. Wheels are Borbet 7.5 x 17 Front and 9 x 17 Rear. The cat is equipped with a harness bar and has the original am/fm radio. It also has a 7,200 rpm tach that was redone for the MSD ignition and higher rev line. The car has a fittipaldi steering wheel. It has original tool kit as well as original window sticker. The car has had the suspension redone. It as 22mm and 27mm gun drilled torsion bars, urethane bushings, koni struts "orange", camber truss, turbo tie rod ends, stainless brake lines, PAGID pads and 22mm sway bars front and rear. The car has been lowered and corner balanced. The engine is a 2.7 liter 7R case that was rebuilt by Farmer Automotive. The car has a terbatrol oil cooler. The engine has turbo valve cover and all the tins and covers are powder coated black. The engine has 10:5-1 Cosworth pistons, hydraulic chain tensioners, PMO carbs, Solex cams, K&N Watershields, MSD ignition, SSI heat exchanger/headers Racor fuel filter/water seperator, Holley fuel pressure regulator, Magnecore 8mm wires, Bosch platinum plugs, Blaster coil, new clutch/pressure plate/throw out bearing, 2 in 2 out AJ sport muffler that was Jet-Hot coated, new rings, bearings etc. The transmission has also been gone through and has gear changes to improve acceleration, but uses a SC 5th gear to keep low rpm's on the highway. The car has a short shift kit and original LSD. Gear ratios available upon request. The body of the car is in excellent condition with only one rust spot on the passenger side front fender. There is NO under body rust, battery boxes look great and there are no dings. The car also comes with original aluminum rear valence panel that has not been installed yet. The car has a fiberglass panel there now. The car has had the voltage regulator was just replaced and the alternator rebuilt. It has new brake rotors on the front. |
Are you planning on using it as a track car? I'd make sure the transaxle is in good shape, as well as all the suspension components, since they all take a beating under regular track use.
If you're getting it as a street car, you'll want to replace those Pagids with something that won't squeal like a Banshee when you're driving in normal traffic. |
Jack..I am planning on this being primarily my track car...good point to have the mechanic do a more indepth look at the transaxle and suspension...any other thoughts given the modifications the car has?

Sounds nice! But be very watchful of the Borbet wheels. They are cast replicas and not particularly strong. I have seen the centers break out and several regions will not allow them on the track at their events.
Pagid Blue won't squeel and is a good dual purpose pad, Pagid Orange, Black or Yellow will squeal horribly and are far more track oriented. I totally understand why people want a tall 5<sup> th</sup> but w/ 7:31 it will be wailing anyway and for a track oriented gearbox you will want 3,4,5 to be closer together, not 2,3,4. For AutoX the close 2,3,4 will be more desireable |
I am planning on running my Fuchs (7 & 8's) off my SC as they are already mounted with Toyo Proxes...not sure what I will use more permanently. Suggestions?

Agree with Bill about the Borbets. Sounds like a nice car.

I feel it is a good one...would love to hear thoughts on what is the best compromise for wheels on this car..certainly hard to find 15" tires in performance tires..getting tougher to even find 16". What would you guys use ? I'll post a picture in a second.

Yah those wheels look great on 74 up and 964s a little weird on an early car. I would check with the racing tire guys, most of the IT cars are running 14 and 15 " wheels I think track tires will be available for a long time. Dual purpose is a different matter- as Jack O often says. But keep a seperate set of wheels for the track and run track only tires you should be set for a long time. I have a perfect set of 15x7,8 fuchs I will trade you for the 16s and you can run the Borbets on the SC :-))

Oh the other things I would check on the PPI is have the valve covers removed (a pain for a PPI) to look for pulled studs; and try to check the rear parcel shelf for rust. My car was rust free too until I removed the rear deck and sound proofing - "massive collateral damage" to quote the same condition found on board member Eric Mckennas car. Looks like a beaut. Kinda weird though I love silver 911s and I love RS but for some reason silver is not my fav color on RS look cars?

I agree..wish of course either for white..or in my wierdermoments one of those wild green schemes....
I have a couple of sets of fuchs...may pick up another ..maybe 7 &9 x 16's for track tires? |
