Original Headliner Color?
Hi guys,
What color headliner came with all 1974 and 1975 911 Carrera's. Where they all white ivory or did they also come in black on coupes? Restoring my1975 911 Carrera and buying a new headliner. I currently have the white/ivory and would like switch to black. I would like to keep the car original. Thanks Eric

I'm pretty sure white was it back then. My 80 SC was white until
I sprayed it black. I think you could start getting black (option) in the early 80's though.

Good question...I wondered the same thing when I replaced the ivory one in my '74. I don't know if black was an alternative on '74 and '75 Carrera's, but every one I've seen that still had the original headliner was ivory. I put a black one in mine and really like the way it turned out. I could post a pic if you want, but you can probably visualize it.
Would really like to see some pics of your car! What color is it?

I did a book search and what I found was black was an option at an extra charge back to 74 except for Turbo's that had no extra charge. The white was standard on coupe's up till 85 when black became standard on cars with black interiors. Maybe somebody else has more info but this is what I was able to dig up quickly.

Actually, even in October 1982, when we ordered our MY'83, other colors were possible, and without a "special" order.
We ordered our Smokey Quartz Metallic (stock color that year) with a rich, dark brown interior (stock interior also), and the headliner came with dark brown leather, as did the door panels, the dashboard top, and the rear "luggage shelf". In fact, the entire interior is the same dark brown leather throughout, and it makes me feel like I'm INSIDE a Hershy's Kiss. There were no additional charges for all this, as I still have the sticker, and none show up there. Guess we were just lucky!!!!!! |

Unless you're going concourse, I would go black. Looks much better IMHO.

I agree with the vinyl spray turning out great on mine too, But I read another post where a guy just brushed on a vinyl die with great results. This would be less work IMO than spraying.
I'd like to see a pic of Andras car too

Thanks for the input guys. I have to buy the headliner this week, but I'm on the fence. I would like to stay original, but I like the black. Also my sunvisors are puffy and the only new ones available are black 993.
Bob, I'd like to see a pic of your car and headliner. Here is mine.

FYI, I have a '75 Euro Carrera and it has a black headliner that is listed as one of the options on my Cardex. So they were definitely an option in '75. Hope that helps!

I bought them used for $75 for both. Wasn't sure at the time, but now I realize it was worth every penny. Looks much better.

Yea, I would think that would be much easier. I had my entire interior and carpet out at the time. So I masked off each rubber seal, took off the visor mounts and coat hanger mounts as well as the interior lights. Then I used a plastic drop cloth all the way around the interior of the car, w/ just an opening to get in and out of. I kid you not, I was high as a kite within about 1 minute after I started spraying! I resorted to spraying for as long as I could holding my breath. A lot of work, but I didn't have to pop out any windows or flip the bill for a new headliner.

Not an easy thing to get a good pic of but here you go.
You really can't tell it's not factory black as I did a good job, but it was a lot of work with all the masking and seat removal. If you do a search here or on Rennlist I described the process more fully. I have black interior so it needed a black headliner. They don't show dirt and just look better IMO. I did the visors too and the little mirror is plastic that I didn't relize untill I got solvent on it. So I had a new one cut at a glass shop and used two way tape to hold it over the old one. It was an improvement too over the old mirror . The key to this is the prep and masking and skill with a spray can. That's why a brush on die might be somthing to look into ?

Ok, if you aren't a concours guy, here are some thoughts based on me driving a white headlinered '75 and a black headlinered '73 since I have 2 911s right now: White shows dirt, black doesn't. The psychological feel of sitting under black is different than under white (latter feels more open, airy).
You can inject some adhesive into the visors and then smush them with boards and clamps to flatten out the poofs. If too floppy you can inject that foam insulation exanding stuff and then use the boards & clamps. BUT don't use the quick set type (don;t ask me how I know this). Good luck, and stay away form concours if you go black. |
