Front Wheel Bearings ?
Hi,
I noticed that there was a quite a bit of play in the front wheels on the weekend. So I set to work to adjust the bearings.....well the dust caps hav no marks on them.....as if they have never been off. When I eventually got them off, using a piece of wood ( at the right angle, and a hammer ( turning wheel to wiggle cap off) The is a dot of red paint on the locking nutnut and stub..it looks like it has never been off. That over 17 years of use! full of grease! and the tapered bearings do not look too bad, although ther eis a lot of free play in them. To remove the large amount of play I had to tighten the nut quite a lot....unknown torque setting! How do you torque that nut anyway? So the short of it is I have decided to replace the bearings. The parts section shows a wheel spacer and an "O" ring. as well as the inner/outer bearings and wheelseal. Do I need the spacer and O ring....what are they? Cheers Mark..... |

Tighten adjusting nut to the point where you can just move the large washer behind it laterally with the tip of a screwdriver. If you've repacked the bearings, it will have to be readjusted after the first run once the grease has been warmed up.

Fred gives the correct advice. All I would add is that do not use the side of the hub for leverage when using the screwdriver to move the large washer. Just think of the screwdriver as an extension of your finger that you would be holding straight out and pushing on the side of the washer. The screwdriver should be at a 90 degree angle to the side of the washer.

The tightening bit is the pain........how do you measure when you can't get a torque wrench on the nut? I have used the method Rick mentioned, feeling for the resistance and then backing off from there. Even so the amount of load to set the bearing is quite high...this is why I am going to replace the bearings. As for the spacer...how do you identify if you need it replaced.
Thanks for you input guys! |
