Engine Advice Needed!
HI all
I posted a similar thread to this a few days ago but I didn't get many replies and i'm still stuck so i'm back for another try! When I start restoring my 911 I will restore bodily to how it left the factory but I want it to be pretty quick and as I said before I would like to keep my mates full spec import WRX STi in sight for at least a few seconds before he leaves me for dead! So I have the Weber carb'd 2.0 sitting here in pieces , can anyone tell me is this engine capable of being tuned to give decent performance or am I better off changing it for a bigger lump? If I will be better changing it what engine/gearbox should I be looking at that will go in without too much modification to the car? Any thoughts on cost will be helpful too! |
IMHO, the WRX Sti would tow your T to 60 faster than the 2.0 would propel it so if you are after anything close to that kind of performance look into 3.6 conversions. There seem to be more everyday and info is plentiful.

LOL thanks for that, Yeah the WRX is pretty damn quick, he's heading for 500bhp! Now I know i'll not live with him but I get sick of him going on about it's power and it's speed!
Tehehe he doesn't know I have a 911 yet! |
WRX 500 what?

The WRX is a Subaru first Not a Porsche Second Not much reliable third A 2003 engine is a 300 not a 500 hp Not same Quality Not same Look And the samllest 930 Turbo of 1978 is more powerfull than this CarCan Sorry for being rude but i hate these Jap cars cause they are having much publicity for not much All respects to all friends in this forum |
Borrow Juan's car.

mmmmmmmmmmmm k?

well I think at this point your webers will be the best part about your engine. Buy a RS spec 2.7 and slap those on and you'll end up with 210 HP in a lightweight car. Not a half bad deal. I also have a 69T longblock and unfortunetly there's not much value in building it up. First of all it's a weak case (2R version), second it doesn't have a bearing for the intermetie(sp) shaft, third it doesn't have case squirters and finally the crankshaft is not counterweighted. Each one is expensive to fix and not really worth it when it comes to performance for your $$. Buy a 2.7 for period correctness or go larger for even more HP.

I think I saw a 2.8 for sale in the classifieds here for $4500 all redone...I'd do that in a heart beat...

Two very different cars, but there are not a lot of 911's, especially old ones, that are going to cause an STI driver much worry... nor is it difficult on those to get a 300hp example significantly higher than that. I love my 911... and I've driven a good number of higher-power ones, but I wouldn't for a second make that sort of blanket statement, since its so demonstratably wrong in most cases. |
LOL well I got a lot more response this time round!
Tim thanks for that, I'll have a look round to see what prices 2.7's are going for, I would rather keep with a more period engine than go for a much newer one! As I said in my previous post I had been offered an engine and tiptronic box from a C2 but I think it would be too new for the car! |
Sorry, just had to jump in....
I picked up my WRX STI two days ago. Let me tell you it's bloody fast, although I haven't really nailed it because the break-in period says < 4K RPM for the first 1,000 miles. I also have a 1996 911 c2. Both are very fun cars to drive but with very different characteristics. I like the STI for traffic / stop lights - the gears are so close together that I hit 5th gear by 55mph. Because they're so close, it feels like it has more power, or perhaps a tighter power band, than the Porsche. Also, with the turbo, there's spots in the throttle where it feels like it has more kick than the Porsche. On the other hand, the 911 handles much better - especially at higher speeds and around corners. It much more refined in handling and accelleration, but that's to be expected for 50K more than the STi. Plus it whips the STi on looks hands down. Both are a blast, just different markets. I can't stand the STi wing - too teenagerish for me. But I'm glad I have it - I can drive it year round (it snows here) and I keep the miles of the 911. Both great cars, just different markets. Anyhow - my $.02. |

If you can't be satisfied with < 200HP, then swap in a bigger motor from a later car, or sell your car and buy a later model. Anyway you look at it, it'll be $10-12K by the time you get done, perhaps even $15-20K if you go a little crazy and don't do any of the work yourself. Add that to the value of your car as it sits, and you might be looking at enough for a '79 Turbo. TT |
